“It’s a historic estate, the Malcolm Manor. Have you heard of it?”

“Yeah, but I’ve never been. It’s supposed to be beautiful. Up in the mountains, right?”

“Exactly.”

“Will we go with Hudson and Lex? If not, I can take my car.” She crosses her arms and shifts on her feet.

“I’ve got it covered. They’re staying the night at a nearby inn so they won’t have to make the drive so late. They’ll go in Lex’s car, and I’ll use Hudson’s.” I really need to buy a car, even if it’s used.

“Oh.” She frowns, her brows dipping low over her eyes.

“What?” I lean forward, taking advantage that there aren’t many customers.

The memory of being close to her in that darkened hallway in the bar hits me, and I inhale deeply.

“Do you prefer to do that? I could book a room at the inn.”

My hand slides forward on the counter upon hearing her question, and my coffee cup tips over to the other side and lands on Sage.

“I’m sorry!” I leap to my feet.

“It’s okay.” She cringes, removing her apron. “Thank goodness I had this on.”

Julie grabs a rag and starts wiping the back of the counter.

“Go on and grab a clean apron,” she tells Sage.

“Yeah.” I sit back down, mentally slapping myself for not reacting in a cool way at her suggestion.

Sage returns with a fresh apron, and I’m glad I didn’t get her actual clothes.

“You want to spend the night together?” I spit out when she stands in front of me.

“What? N-no. I meant that we could get rooms separately. Not like together, but we’ll go and leave together.” She’s adorable when she rambles.

“Yeah, yeah. Totally. Good idea. It’s great.” Now I’m the one stumbling over my words.

She caught me off-guard, and I’m not cool enough to think clearly.

“I was going to bring it up to you, but then you got sick, and didn’t want to stress you out more.”

“Yeah.” Her face drops, and she slides her hands into the wide pocket on her apron, looking away.

“Anyway, it’s okay. We don’t have to stay at the wedding for too long.”

“Tristan, these are your friends, too, not just your brother’s. You’re not going to leave early because of a long drive.” She tilts her head. “Why don’t we call and see if they have two rooms available?”

“It’s not that far,” I argue.

“It’s up the ridge, right? In the mountains. That road is winding and pitch-black at night. Call them and let me know what they say.” She lifts her chin toward my phone on the counter, acting all bossy.

I smile at her attitude and grab my phone, searching for the inn.

I’m not sure if they’ll have rooms available with the wedding being tomorrow. A few people had talked about staying close to the venue. I switch from my phone to my laptop and look through the inn’s website.

“Yes,” I hiss.

Sage looks at me with lifted brows. I smile and point to the screen.
