“Because I’m not the man you thought I’d become when we were younger.”

“You are. You’re still funny and kind and a hard worker. Yeah, you have some new qualities that have developed, like much more persistent than when we were younger, but that worked out in my favor in the long run.” I wink and clutch the lapel of his coat.

“Show me your home, and then take me to coffee.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He salutes me and presses the elevator button.

Laughing, I hook my arm with his. “Don’t call me ma’am.”

“I know. I realized after I said it that it didn’t work well. You should be called beautiful, amazing, sweetheart.”

We step into the elevator.

“Keep going.” I wave my hand to encourage him.

Hudson chuckles and wraps his arm around my shoulders in a protective hold. It doesn’t take long to get up to his floor. We walk to his apartment, and I don’t miss the expansive wall space between each door on this floor.

When he opens the door, and I step in, my eyes widen. It’s nothing like I imagined. I walk through the small foyer into a vast living room with huge windows. An ivory leather sofa sits to my right, with an enormous television mounted on the wall and a marble coffee table between the two. A charming bar cart sits against another wall. It’s contemporary with a hint of vintage that adds charisma to the style.

“Wow…” I breathe out when I turn and see an ornate white fireplace with wall-mounted bookshelves on either side.

“Hudson, this is amazing.” I find his eyes across the living room. He looks at me with a softness I’ve come to get used to, and it makes me feel so loved.

“You like it?”

“It’s beautiful.”

“Let me show you the kitchen.” He walks toward me and then guides me to the kitchen.

“Whoa,” I whisper.

While marble countertops, gray cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and a round wood table off to the side. It’s a dream and much bigger than I’d expected. Clearly, this apartment isn’t a regular one found in any old apartment building.

“Stunning.” I shake my head and look at him.

“I’m so glad. Let’s go get some coffee and show you around a bit. I’m trying to convince you to extend your trip.” He waggles his eyebrows.

“Yes. I could use some coffee.”

“You’re going to love the place I have in mind.” He links his fingers with mine and leads us to the coffee shop.

As we walk down the road, my eyes bounce around everywhere—brick buildings, glass and steel buildings, ornate buildings that look European. People walk around despite the cold and wet climate.

Turning left, we walk across Central Park. To think that blocks of greenery exist in the center of this concrete jungle is fascinating.

“Hopefully, there’s a table available by the window so we can have a view.” Hudson squeezes my hand and opens the door to a fancy-looking coffee shop.

Amber Rose is printed on the door, and large glass creates the structure.

“Sounds good.” The small shop is bustling with people as we stand in line. The menu reads regular coffee options and some I’ve never heard of.

“What do you want?”

“A latte.” I smile up at Hudson.

“Go grab that table, and I’ll order.” He whispers, and I follow his line of vision and nod. “Hurry, or someone will steal it,” he adds.

“Ay-ay, captain.” I tease and speed over to the table, dropping my purse on the top before sitting. I hear a sigh and look up to find a woman frowning.
