“Wow…”

“Yeah,” she laughs. “I thought since your boyfriend lives in New York, you could be interested. It’d take your teaching to a different level, with adults preparing for a professional career instead of children. That’s something to consider if you want.”

“Can I think about it?” I love my kids. I can’t just turn my back on them.

“Of course. If you’re interested, send your resume sooner rather than later. I’m excited for you. Regardless of what you decide, this is a great indication of your talent and professionalism.”

“Thanks.” I nod to myself. “I’ll get back to you.”

“Sounds good. Have a safe trip back home.” She happily says before hanging up.

I slump into the bed and close my eyes. A teaching position in a prestigious New York school? It’s not Juilliard, but it’s still a high-caliber school. Nerves land in the pit of my stomach like a ton of bricks. Do I want this? My immediate response is no. I love what I do. Is it a great opportunity, even just to interview for it? Of course. I’m not dense.

Knocking on the door breaks me from my stupor. “Yeah?”

“Are you ready?” Hudson’s voice sounds muffled through the wood.

My heart pounds for another reason. How is he going to react when he hears about Michelle’s call?

“Yeah.” I jump to my feet. I scurry around the room, grabbing my scarf and gloves as the door opens.

“Are you okay?”

My head snaps up to look at Hudson. His eyebrows pull together, and he steps into the room.

“What’s wrong?” He’s instantly in front of me.

“Nothing,” I shake my head.

“You’re not a good liar.” He cups my face, and my eyes flutter closed.

“I want to enjoy our day. We’ll talk about it later.”

“Nope.” He shakes his head with persistence.

“Please,” I beg.

“Talk to me. We’ve already had too much lack of communication in our past. Come on.” He grabs my hand and leads me toward the living room.

“You were fine earlier when we had coffee, so what’s going on?” His hand remains in mine.

“Michelle called me.” I take a gulp of air and prepare to tell him the news. I know Hudson, and he’s going to see this as a sign for us to be together, but it’s not what I want. If it were, I’d be jumping for joy and emailing my resume right away.

“What did she say? Was everything okay with the workshop?” His eyebrows furrow, concern pinching his lips.

“Yeah, it was great. That’s why she called. Her boss was impressed with my choreography. There’s an opening at her school to teach modern dance to first-year students, and she thought I’d be great. She said I should send my info for an interview.”

“Wow, that’s amazing, babe.” His face lights up, making me feel even more guilty.

“Why aren’t you excited?” He leans back, scanning my face.

“I love my studio and my students and the classes I already teach. If I wanted this, I would’ve been excited from the moment she mentioned it. I don’t feel that way.” I shrug.

“You can have someone teach your classes during the semester and have your own in the summer months. This is perfect.” He stands and paces. “You’ll live here, and we can spend as much time together as we want without worrying about goodbyes or when we’ll see each other again. My parents will be far away, so they can’t meddle or be jerks.” His beaming smile would look perfect on a billboard, but it doesn’t captivate me.

“Hudson,” I stop him. “This isn’t what I want.”

“It’s the right opportunity.” He leans back in disbelief. His eyebrows pull down, and his green eyes darken in confusion.
