“That’s exactly what I’m doing. And if you’re good, you might even get a side of hunk.” She winks, and I let out a loud laugh.

“What’s so funny?” Hope pushes between us, standing in the middle.

“Nothing,” Ellie shakes her head.

“Yeah, right. Not nice leaving me out.”

“Well, you were with the topic of conversation,” Ellie lifts her eyebrows. “Not our fault.”

“What? You were talking about Hudson? I knew something was going on," she whispers. “Tell me everything.” Her wide eyes swing to me.

“Nothing to tell,” I shake my head. “I promise.”

“I think she’s holding out on us,” Ellie tells Hope conspiratorially.

“I agree.” Hope looks over her shoulder to where Toby and Hudson are.

“Stop,” I hiss.

“Yeah, definitely something going on by that reaction,” Hope nods as if she’s proved a theory.

“There isn’t. Things have just been…”

“Complicated?” Ellie offers when I pause, unable to find the right word.

“Exactly. I blame you,” I point to Hope.

“Me, why?”

“Because you’re marrying his best friend, and you had the bright idea of making us plan this party together.” I cross my arms.

“I can hear you talking about me,” Hudson calls out.

“Ugh,” I drop my face into my hands and feel a blush creep up my cheeks.

Hope and Ellie laugh beside me. Everyone is getting the wrong idea, and all I want is coffee and pie. I want to not think about Hudson, the things he’s said, or the way I feel around him.

“I expect a full update on Friday at our girls’ night,” Hope whispers.

“Whatever,” I walk up to the counter when it’s our turn and order a latte. Hope and Ellie order as well, and thankfully they drop the subject.

Once we’re back outside, roaming the festival on the way to the pie contest, Hudson has moved to my side.

“Are you having dinner with your parents tomorrow?”

“Yeah,” I nod.

“That’s good. Is your mom making that pumpkin flan she used to make?”

“She makes it every year. You know that.”

“It’s so good. To this day, I still crave it on Thanksgiving,” he confesses.

“Really?” I look up at him, my nose scrunched up.

“Yeah, it’s delicious.” He rubs his hand over his mouth.

“It is pretty good, but I love pumpkin pie.”
