″It will be,” Hope says with conviction.

″I’m so excited. It’s a weekend conference with amazing classes and workshops.” My face is bright with a smile.

″I’m so proud of you.” Hope shakes her head in awe. “Where is it? In Dobson?” She asks about the closest city to us.

I shake my head and press my lips together. When I scrunch up my nose but remain quiet, Hope furrows her eyebrows and asks, “Well?”

″New York.”

″No way.” She slaps the table, laughing boastfully. “This is hilarious.”

″Shush,” I slap her arm.

″I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” She waves her hand, drying under her eyes. “It’s just…wait ’til Hudson finds out.”

″Hope!” I chastise in a whisper-hiss. The couple at the table next to us look at me with raised eyebrows and a knowing smile.

″Can you not be so loud?” I glare at her.

″Sorry,” she looks at me with amusement.

″I think it’s great, though. Maybe you could stay at his place.” She waggles her eyebrows.

″I am not staying at his place. I’ll book a room at the hotel closest to the school where the conference is taking place.”

″Things can change by then. I hear you’re having dinner with him when he comes to town.” She crosses her arms and arches a brow. “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me,” her voice is accusing.

″How did you find out? Also, I agreed to it the other day and hadn’t seen you.”

″Is your phone broken?” She shakes her head. “Toby told me because, unlike you, Hudson told his best friend.”

″Ugh,” I toss my head back.

″Are you ready to order?” A waitress comes by and drops two glasses of water.

″Yes, please.” I thank the universe for the interruption. “I’ll have the grilled chicken with mashed potatoes.”

″I’ll have the roast turkey sandwich,” Hope orders.

When the waitress walks away, she looks at me.

″Dinner then, huh?”

″Yeah,” I sigh. “I don’t know what I’m doing or why I agreed to it, but…” I pause, trying to collect my thoughts.

″You still care about him and want to spend time with him,” Hope finishes for me.

I nod in silence.

″You have nothing to lose. It was clear something still lingers between you two. I will say, if things work out, you owe Toby and me since we practically brought you back together.” She waves her hand with an air of superiority. She could fit in with royalty with that move.

″You forced him on me,” I deadpan.

″Force, brought…potato, potahto.” She shrugs, taking a sip of water from her straw.

I roll my eyes and chuckle.

″I’m only teasing you,” Hope smiles.
