The rest of dinner passes without any more meddling and some conversation. I know Hudson wanted to have dinner alone, but I’m glad Tristan joined us, even if he spilled the beans about the conference. It’s been so long, and seeing the two of them interact makes me smile. They joke with each other and still act like best friends despite the way their lives have taken different paths.

“I’m sure I’ll see you around.” Tristan hugs me when we stand outside of the diner.

“It was good to see you.” I smile at him.

Hudson grabs my hand and tugs me toward him, leading us away from the door.

“Were you going to tell me about this conference?” He arches a brow.

“Yes.”

“Really?” He steps closer. “Because I recall you had time to do so earlier.”

“I was distracted.” Hudson’s lips quirk, and I can’t help but stare at them for a beat too long. I lift my chin and gaze into his eyes. My heart pounds, but I keep my confidence in check.

“By?” He tilts his head.

“You,” I challenge.

His hand goes to my hip, squeezing me. I shiver and take a deep breath, chest shaking.

“Tell me about this conference. I want exact dates, your schedule, and where you’re staying. I plan to take up every bit of free time you’ll have.” His breath tickles my ear.

My body fills with chills. This is what I knew would happen when he found out.

“It’s three days. January thirteenth to the fifteenth. I’m driving down the twelfth since the conference begins early on the thirteenth.” I love the way his body encases mine, keeping me warm from the cold night.

“We’ll talk more about it tomorrow night. I’ll pick you up for dinner.”

“I’ll have to go home and shower before. It’ll be late.” Every inch of my body is fluttering.

“I don’t care the time. I’ll be there.” He bends his head and kisses my cheek.

My breath hitches, overwhelmed by this man and his closeness.

“Let me walk you to your car.”

I nod and walk beside him, thankful there aren’t many people out at this time in our town. Hudson’s fingers tangle with mine. I never thought we’d be here again. Some things still confuse me and make me hesitate, but I am enjoying his company too much to put thought into it. I need to know if our situation was the right guy at the wrong time or just the wrong guy.

“Is eight-thirty okay to pick you up for dinner?” We stop by my car.

“It should be. I’ll do my best to be ready by then.” If I do my hair tomorrow morning, I can go home, take a quick shower, and change.

“Great.” He reaches for the car door but keeps my other hand in his.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” His lips gently brush my cheek, and I swoon like cartoons with hearts floating over their heads.

“Goodnight.” I slide into my car and look at him before closing the door. Hudson stands on the sidewalk, watching me drive away.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting, especially after our kiss and neither of us denying our feelings. I can blame Alexa’s lack of help on that one.

I’ve been in such a good mood about my date with Lex that not even my father’s constant badgering about work could ruin it. Being in the same place as him creates a different dynamic at work that I can ignore when I’m in New York. It’s the same when he travels to New York to do some work. Things run smoother when he’s not around trying to control everyone.

It doesn’t help that he caught wind of the gossip floating around and tried to question me about Lex. I put a stop to it before he could give his opinion.
