″Ah…so I’m not in the wrong.” Toby winks.

″Hey…” My head snaps to the right, where Hudson appears from inside.

″Hi, Hudson,” Hope smiles, looking at me out of the corner of her eye. “I guess we’re done here, then, right?” She looks back at Toby.

I try to keep my attention on the loving couple, but same as last night, I can feel Hudson’s stare burning into the side of my face. Soon I’ll have his eyeballs seared into my face. When Toby wraps his arm around Hope and kisses her cheek, I look away, accidentally making contact with Hudson.

The look in his eyes is undecipherable, but it makes my heart skip and my skin prickle. Pain, sadness, and confusion flood me. I blink rapidly.

″I’ll wait in the car,” I say before turning around and getting some much-needed distance between the man from my past and my current life.

I remember the days when I thought he and I would be where Hope and Toby are—planning our wedding, living a blissful life. But alas, we were destined for different paths than our friends. I’ve had a few years to accept that, but seeing him again since then still stings.

″Are you okay?” Hope whispers as she unlocks her car.

″Yeah,” I wave her off.

She narrows her eyes and analyzes me, but I smile and slide into the car.

″Let’s eat. I’m starving and craving the curly fries from The Mill.”

″And their milkshakes,” she drools.

″Definitely their milkshakes. Then, we’ll discuss bridesmaids’ dresses.”

″I’m so excited,” she exclaims, clapping her hands.

I focus on her energy and release the past.

Until my phone buzzes while we’re getting seated at the restaurant.

Unknown number: Hey, it’s Hudson. Toby gave me your number so we can discuss the bach party

I leave my phone in my purse. I’ll respond later on.
