“I can’t argue with you on that. I always did feel loved with you.”

I tangle our fingers again and stare into her eyes. “You were easy to love.” Seeing her again, spending time together, I realize that she’s still easy to love. She’s still the same person. I hope she still sees the same in me despite the choices I made.

“What are you doing for Christmas?”

I don’t comment on her abrupt change of subjects and smile. “I’m not sure. Tristan and I will have dinner.”

“With your parents,” she adds.

“Not sure,” I shrug. “I don’t think a Remington family reunion should happen on Christmas. I’d like to still enjoy this holiday in the future, and that would likely ruin it for me.”

“Hudson.” Lex tilts her head.

“It’s true.” I’m not blind to my family’s dynamic. “In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if my parents have a trip planned they didn’t tell us about.”

“Well… You could come have dinner with us. The both of you.” I caress the soft skin on her hand with my thumb. Her invitation fills me with a gentle emotion I haven’t felt in a long time.

“I don’t know. I don’t want to impose.”

“My parents would love it.” Her lips twist to the side.

“They did invite me over for flan on Thanksgiving,” I wink. “But would you? Love it?”

“The idea is growing on me.” She turns my hand over and traces the lines on my palm. The tickling sensation fills me with want. Desire to have her be mine again, to share our lives together, to spend quiet evenings in our own home. All things I always thought we’d experience.

“I’ll talk to Tristan,” I nod.

“Let me know what you decide so I can tell my parents and make sure my mom makes enough flan to satisfy your sweet tooth.”

“I will, but please make sure it’s okay with them first.” I close my fist around her fingers.

“Okay,” she breathes out.

“Are you ready to order?” The waiter returns. He must’ve noticed our interaction and given us more time than necessary before interrupting our date. I’m grateful for his intuitive nature.

“Yes,” I nod.

We each place our orders, and he takes the menus, leaving us once again alone. I refill our wine glasses and grin at Lex. I’ve got the most beautiful date.

“Is there something specific you want to see while in New York? It’ll be your first time visiting the city.”

“I don’t know. I spent so much time resenting the place that I need to take a step back and look at it through different eyes.”

“Do you trust me?”

Her face screws, and I clutch my chest in pain.

“You wound me.” I fall back in my seat and dramatize my reaction.

“Let me plan an evening,” I say after she’s finished giggling.

“Okay,” she nods, giving me the green light. I plan to make her trip unforgettable, but first, I need to win her over during the holidays.

My date with Hudson on Thursday was great. More than great. Fantastic, amazing, dreamlike. It was so easy to fall back into how we were with each other. We’ve had two months to slide into this since I saw him at the engagement party, and he’s been persistent in getting together. That’s one quality he definitely hasn’t lost. Hudson and persistence go together like Oreos and peanut butter (don’t judge—it’s an amazing combo).
