“I know I didn’t. I wanted to. It’s my treat.”

“I can afford my own Christmas tree.”

“I never said you couldn’t.” I glance at her and see her looking out the passenger window. I reach for her hand.

“Lex, I know you can afford it. That’s not why I paid. I wanted to give this to you. Consider it payment to use as my own tree, too.”

She rolls her eyes.

I squeeze her hand. “Are you gonna ignore me?”

“Maybe.” I can see one side of her lips twitch.

“I guess I’ll have to take the tree with me then.”

“What?” Her head snaps in my direction.

“Ah, good. You aren’t going to ignore me.” I smirk and lift our hands, kissing the top of hers.

“Thank you,” she finally says.

“You’re welcome. Now, let’s decorate this tree. I still need to buy Tristan a present, and I don’t know what to get a man who travels the world for a living.”

“I can help.” She sits up straighter.

“I was hoping you’d say that.” What I don’t add is that I need a present for her, but I’m not using her help for that. I plan to make this Christmas special for her, and surprising her is the number one necessity to do so.

“Things seem to be getting serious between you and Hudson,” Hope says as we look through the racks in Charlotte’s, my favorite boutique in town.

“Did I tell you I caught them kissing?” Ellie smirks.

“What? No!” Hope’s eyes widen and then look between Ellie and me.

I roll my eyes and move to another rack, leaving them behind.

“Yup. I went in to see her at the studio, and they were locking lips.” Ellie’s voice rings with amusement.

“Shut the front door. When was this?”

“The other night.”

Hope nods slowly, smiling and waggling her eyebrows at me as if saying, Atta, girl.

“Whatever.” I slide the hangers back until I find a sweater I like. Pulling it out, I place it in front of my body.

“That’s pretty. It’d be great for the conference in New York,” Hope comments.

“Yeah,” I sigh. “In reality, I don’t need it. I’ve got plenty of clothes to take with me.” I’m not a frivolous spender, and my focus at the moment is getting gifts for my parents.

“I need to find something for my mom.” I move around the store in search of something she’d like. I’m feeling uninspired, always getting her a top or accessories, but my mom is simple and doesn’t need a whole ton of fancy things.

“What about this?” Hope holds out a knit sweater.

“It’s nice.” I shrug. “I feel like I’ve gifted her about twenty sweaters like that in the past.”
