“I will.” She nods, her eyes blazing into mine.

I lean down to brush her lips when the oven beeps, alerting us it’s preheated. We break apart, and I chuckle. We act as if we’re still teens about to get caught kissing.

“The cookies should be ready in twelve to fifteen minutes.” Lex turns to face me with her back pressed into the oven after sliding the sheet into it.

“I’ll get the movie ready.”

“I have Netflix connected to my TV if you want to search for it on there.”

“Perfect,” I smirk, giving her one more glance before heading to the living room across from the kitchen.

Sounds from the microwave echo through this part of the house, and I love being here with Lex. For so long, I believed it was an impossibility, and I have my best friend’s wedding to thank for this. I don’t think I would’ve had the courage to face her otherwise. Always an excuse to keep my distance.

My phone vibrates, and I fish it out in case Tristan needs something.

Jameson: Hey how’s the wooing going?

Hudson: Great man

Jameson: I’m glad. It’s about time you got the courage to go after the girl

Hudson: Thanks. How’s Willa?

Jameson: Great. Planning our first Christmas together and my grandparents are set on the belief that she’s pregnant

Hudson: Lol doesn’t surprise me. In their eyes you’re truly married

Jameson: I know but I’m going to make it official soon

Hudson: Good for you. First you need to fess up to Grandpa

Jameson: It’ll all work out

I smile at my friend’s message. Jameson and Willa may not have been a real couple when they got married, but things have worked out for them.

“You’re the best. Extra buttery popcorn and M&Ms. I split the popcorn between two bowls since I know you don’t like chocolate candy mixed with the popcorn.” She places two bowls on the coffee table, stealing my attention from my phone.

“Be back. Gonna grab the wine.” She drops a kiss on my cheek as if she has been doing it for years. A huge smile covers my face.

“What?” she asks, noticing.

“Nothing. Want me to open the bottle? Sit, and I’ll grab the wine.” I move to stand. Her hand lands on my shoulder, willing me to stay put.

“I’ve got it. I’m going to check on the cookies.”

“Okay.” I watch her head into the kitchen. A half-wall blocks part of my view, but I still see her huge smile and excited body shimmying as her eyes squeeze shut. I chuckle to myself and lean back on the sofa, glad she feels the same way I do about seeing her.

When Lex returns and settles beside me, I wrap my arm around her shoulder and pull her close. I take a moment to breathe her in, allowing her warmth to envelop me. Kissing her temple, I reach for the bowl of popcorn with the M&Ms in it and place it on her lap.

“Thanks.” Her voice is soft.

We get comfortable with snacks and wine while the cookies cool and get ready to watch a Christmas movie. I’ve never cared much for romantic comedies, but I’d die watching them if it meant having this woman by my side snuggled up close to me.

Hudson’s back is to me when I walk out of the studio. I smile to myself, seeing that he’s waiting for me to finish up work. The studio will be closed for two weeks, which will be a nice break. It’ll give me the time I need to finish my choreography and presentation for the workshop.
