“Atta boy,” I wink and stand, reaching my hand out.

Hudson looks at my face and down at my hand. A smile covers his handsome face, and he shakes his head. He holds my hand and stands. “Let’s go, sugar girl,” he teases.

I lean up and kiss his cheek before grabbing my things and getting ready to head out. The way he looks at me is on par with the way I still stare at my first pair of ballet slippers. It’s a combination of nostalgia and, dare I say, love. It’s warm and gentle, like sunshine on a spring day. He makes me feel that way, and I shake off my doubts and uncertainties and focus on the moment, having him in my life again.

“Are you nervous?” Tristan smirks as we stand outside of Lex’s parents’ house.

“Why?” My eyebrows pull together.

“Because you’re facing the in-laws for a major holiday after getting back together with Lex.”

“You’re obnoxious.” I ring the doorbell. “There’s nothing to be nervous about.” I stand firm in my resolve. I already came over on Thanksgiving. I’m sure Lex has updated her parents about our relationship.

“Hey,” Lex answers the door with a wide smile. “Right on time.”

I stare at her bright brown eyes and full pink lips. Her hair is down in loose waves, and she’s wearing a short corduroy skirt with tights and a fitted black turtleneck. She’s stunning. My heart goes rogue as I look at the woman I’m set on having for the rest of my life.

“Hi.” I lean in and kiss her cheek.

“Hey, Lex.” Tristan winks at her before giving her a hug.

“Come in. My grandmother was asking about you.” She steps aside.

“Is Abuela here?” I smile.

“Yup, and she’s already had a bit of sangria.” Lex’s nose scrunches up.

Her maternal grandmother is a hoot. I haven’t seen her in ages. She was away for Thanksgiving with Lex’s uncle’s family, so it’ll be nice to see her.

“I haven’t seen her in so long,” Tristan says.

“Get ready for the third degree and strong opinions.” Lex smiles as we walk into the kitchen.

“Hudson, mijo, you’re here.”

“Merry Christmas, Mrs. Morales,” I tell her grandmother before giving her a hug. She looks the same only a bit older. Her white puffy hair has been styled like a cloud for as long as I can remember.

“I’m so happy to see you. Are you wooing mi niña?” Her question is low for my ears only.

I chuckle awkwardly. “I hope so.”

As she leans back, her hands still gripping my shoulders, her wrinkled smile warms my heart. This family was my second home for so long.

“Good, good.” She pats my hand. “She’s a stubborn one, but you know that already. I think she plays hard to get.”

I laugh at her comment, shaking my head. Lex has every right to be wary of this second chance, but I’m proving to her each and every day that she’s it for me.

“Hi, Mr. Leon.” I shake his hand.

“Hello, Hudson.” He nods once, still not fully opening up to me. I understand it, but just like his daughter, I’ll prove to him that I’m worth her love and affection.

“Hi, Bianca.” I smile at Lex’s mom. “I brought a bottle of wine.”

“You didn’t have to, but thank you.” She takes the bag from me and places it on the counter near the sink.
