Iwake up when it’s dark outside. Technically, I’m supposed to share this room, but the other girl who was in here was transferred to a new room after that nurse tried to murder Malon.

It’s been a really weird few days.

I can already see the sky getting lighter out of the tiny tall window with the bars on it, but I don’t know what that means, since the rooms don’t appear to have any clocks in them.

I’m sure my next day is going to be just as weird, but as I think that maybe it’s best if I shut my eyes and try to go back to sleep, I hear footsteps approaching me. I know better than to ask what happened with the nurse. It’s not like someone is going to tell a patient about it, especially when the staff clearly seems to think I’ve caused it.

I know there are things happening in the background; board meetings and staff talks I’ll never be privy to.

And I guess I shouldn’t want to pry, but I really want to know, so my ears perk up as I think that it might be Malon who’s come to tell me exactly what’s going on. Someone knocks softly on my door, but they don’t wait for me to tell them to come in.

A severe looking man in light blue scrubs glares at me. “Someone’s here for you,“ he says. He’s clearly not happy to see me, and something about the way he’s staring at me makes me feel a bit unstable.

I want to back into a corner because that seems like the correct thing to do, but I’m not stupid enough to get myself in that situation. Not that this man couldn’t overpower me–but if I run just fast enough, maybe he won’t be able to catch me.

He doesn’t seem to be interested in attacking me after a few seconds. He just seems to intensely dislike me.

“Are you just going to stand there?“ he asks.

“No, uh, you lead, I’ll follow.“

He shakes his head. “Nice try,“ he says. “Walk.“

I do as he tells me. He doesn’t touch me but I can feel his presence looming behind me. He’s walking so fast I know that if I stop, he’ll bump into me, but I have no idea where I’m going.

The hallway is long and dark and it isn’t until we reach a large, completely bare wall that I wonder how long we’ve been walking for.

“Your left,“ the man barks from behind me.

I turn to my left, expecting to see another long corridor. But this isn’t a long corridor; it’s a reception desk and a set of double doors, a front entrance I didn’t notice when the medical transport brought me here.

“Your psychiatrist is here to check you out,“ he says.

“My psychiatrist?“ I echo.

As far as I know, I don’t have a psychiatrist.

It takes me a few seconds to figure out that the person waiting for me is Rei Woods. The worker ushers me out without having me sign anything.

“Don’t come back here,“ the orderly says, practically pushing me out the door.

“Wait, what about my stuff?“ I ask. I’m wearing oversized pajamas from the lost and found, probably, and I would really like to have my clothes back. If I have to leave like this, I don’t want to be wearing secondhand pajamas.

“Good luck with that,“ he says, walking back into the reception area. I hear the click of a lock behind me and a shiver runs down my spine.

Rei is waiting. It’s foggy outside so I can only see his silhouette. It takes me a few seconds to realize he’s vaping from a thin pen. He’s wearing the same bomber jacket he always wears, his glasses pushed up the bridge of his nose, his black hair pushed away from his forehead. “Wow,“ he says, laughter in his voice. “I take it you didn’t make any friends in there?“

I roll my eyes, running my tongue along my front teeth. “It’s been a nightmare. Why didn’t you check me out earlier?“

“Because you wanted to be in here,“ he replies calmly, taking another drag from his vape pen. “Do you want a hit?“

“I don’t…“

“It’s weed,“ he says.

Weed? Weird. I didn’t expect that.

“Medical,“ he adds, as if that answers any questions.
