At least he sounds like himself. He slides his hand into mine and pulls me to my feet. I’m unsteady when I’m upright, but at least I’m standing. He gives me a second–half a second, probably. “We don’t have time for this. You stay here and you’re going to die.“

“Where are we going?“ I ask when he pulls me away from the hotel room, toward the parking lot.

“You’re driving,“ he says. “We’re not…there’s no way for us to get out of here by foot.“

“So what are we doing?“

“You’re driving,“ he says again.

I’m not in any state to drive, but when we’re next to a red car I’ve never seen before and I hear the clicking of the doors unlocking, I get in the driver’s seat. I mean, I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do.

The keys are already in the ignition and the car purrs under me as it comes alive.

“Where are we going?“ I ask, looking over my shoulder as I quickly back out of the parking space.

“I don’t know,“ Mal says. “We just need to get away from this hotel.“

“We need to get away from…“

“We can talk while you drive,“ he says. He sounds a bit annoyed, but mostly, he just sounds scared.

I don’t even check before I pull onto the street. Something is wrong with the streets. There are potholes everywhere, and it’s making this journey difficult. Not that I know where we’re going, or fuck, even when we are.

“Malon, what the fuck is going on?“

I don’t even know where to start. Why is the hotel room flooding? Why is he here? Why am I driving and why the fuck am I driving there?

I can finally see him, and he looks like shit. His clothes look like they’re falling apart, his hair is long and darker than it normally is, his skin is dirty with something that looks like soot.

I clutch the steering wheel as I steady my breathing. “Is this a dream?“

“Complicated question,“ he says. “Next?“

“Really? You’re not even going to try to answer?“

“Speed up, Trine,“ he replies, completely ignoring my question. “You don’t want them to catch us.“

“I’m going to stop this car if you don’t tell me what the fuck is going on right now.“

“You won’t. I know you’re afraid too,“ he says softly. “But I don’t know how to begin explaining it. I just know that I need to take you somewhere you’re going to be safe, and staying here is the worst thing we can do.“

“So where’s safe?“

“First we need to hide you,“ he says. “And then, fuck, I don’t know. We have to wake you up somehow.“

“Wake me up?“

“Right,“ he says. “Too long to explain now, but you can’t stay here and die. Because if you do–well, you’ll never wake up out there.“

Without Luke here, I don’t know how we’re going to be able to get this out of Trine.

I want to believe it’s a placebo or something to do with the way her mind has been affected, but from looking at her, it doesn’t seem like it. I’ve never seen a human being’s head spin 360 degrees on their neck, I’m pretty sure anyone who did that would die, but I’ve seen things I can’t explain.

But normally, I’m in control of the situation. With Trine, I don’t feel in control. I’m beyond worried about her–she keeps thrashing on the bed, her movements so jerky and unnatural I’m a little worried this isn’t possession but an actual seizure.

Trine tilts her head back, pushing her head against the headboard, the only thing between the crown of her head and the wood Misha’s hand.
