In. Out. In. Out.

Beeeeeeeeeeep…

"One more time. In… Out… In… Out…"

Out. In. In. Out.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

"Raphael?" The voice called after me. "Let's breathe some more. In… Out… In… Out…"

In. Out. In. Out.

In. Out. In. Out.

In. Out. In. Out.

"In… Out…" I repeated.

"Yes!"

I smiled now that I could make out Sava's face.

Here. Safe. Hospital. Alive.

"Doesn't surprise me. We're dealing with PTSD. You've been through a lot. All I want you to remember is to breathe. In… Out…"

In. Out.

In. Out.

The stress seemed to dissipate with each exhale. And I was feeling normal again. Or rather, my new kind of normal.

"What made you uncomfortable?" She asked. "Flashback? Memory?"

"Call her. Find out." Sava finished her visit and then headed for the door. "You know how to reach me if you need anything." I nodded but looked at my phone. Who is she?

This person had to be the one I was interested in. The way we talked… it was playful, light, intense, and engaging. She also genuinely cared about me. From asking about my day to inquiring about food that I ate to sensual teasing. She seemed to be the entire package. Who is she?

I hit the call button out of pure curiosity.

The phone rang for what felt like an eternity. Maybe she was busy working. Or maybe our chances of a forever were taken away. Maybe…

"Raph?"

"Hello." I tried to keep the nervousness at bay, but I knew I was failing. Anxiety, a foreign feeling, crept up my spine slowly.

"I… um… I'm surprised to hear from you."

"Why?" I frowned. What piece of the puzzle was I missing?

"Well, you seem…"
