"I haven't heard from her since the hospital. She won't call me back."

"I'm sorry. I don't really know what to say," I replied honestly. What kind of person deserts someone that way?

"Why don't you start with why you're so upset? You could tell me about it."

“You’re not ready, Raph. I… they told me to wait ‘til it was safe.”

“Safe? What do you mean, safe?” That serious tone that I knew him for showed through, making me laugh. Familiar.

“God, I missed you so much,” I whispered. The pang behind my eyes resulted in tears springing forward. Emotion overwhelmed me into silence. Shaky hands covered my mouth, hoping to silence the cries that shook me to my core. I wanted my man right now more than anything else.

“Anise?” His voice broke through the rapid-firing thoughts of insecurity, need, and abandonment. I swallowed it all down over the lump of emotion caught in my throat. Initially, when I tried to speak, only silence came out. I cleared my throat and opened my mouth to speak, but there was a tap at the door.

“Who in the world…” Hesitantly, I looked out the window near the door. My phone slipped from my hand and I backed away, afraid to look again.

There was a faint voice calling my name that matched the one also calling me from the other side of that door. No…

Panic made the room small. Something suddenly sucked the air out of my lungs and I couldn’t find it anywhere. What in the fuck was he doing here?

“Anise!”

I shook my head and looked at the lock, making sure it was secure. It wasn’t. And just as I was moving to lock it, the knob turned. Shit! I ran into the bedroom just as he entered the house. Out of breath, I closed the door and locked it. A loud thump on the door frightened me.

“Why are you running from ma–me, Anise? I just…” His voice trailed off, making me step closer to the door. “You just sound so sad. And you were upset earlier. I just wanted to see that you’re Okay.”

“No! Every time that you see me, you have those... those seizures! I don’t want you hurting because of me!”

“I’ll be fine. I’ve been watching you. Exposing myself to you little by little.”

“What if that doesn’t work? What if you see me and you fall out, huh? Then what do I do? I busted my phone. I can’t even call an ambulance!”

“Just tell me you’re OK and I’ll leave. If everything is fine, then I’ll stop bothering you. I’ll get your phone fixed. I’m ma–more worried about you. Tell me you’re fine or open the door.”

I couldn’t.

“Open. The. Door.”

I looked around for someplace to go, which was stupid. I was in a room with the only door being the one that was between the two of us. The bin of laundry caught my attention, striking an idea.

“One sec!”

I took two washcloths, folded them down to the perfect blindfold size, and then tied them together. I put them over my eyes, checking the transparency. Golden! I walked over to the door and stood close.

“Can I trust you?”

“What?!”

“Can. I. Trust. You?”

“I would guess so.”

“I’m going to open the door, slide you a blindfold, and you’re going to use it to cover your eyes. Tie it nice and tight so that you can’t see me.”

“Not tight. I don’t want it to hurt my scar.”

Feeling insensitive, I cursed myself. “Tight enough so that it doesn’t fall. Actually, Raph, this is a bad idea.”

“I don’t suppose that it’s stopped us before.”
