“Your mother. I think I should take her on a holiday with me.”

“Why?” I demanded.

“As I started the conversation, you’ve inspired me.”

“What does that have to do with the holiday?”

“I’ve missed her. It’s been nice having her back here. I’ve missed that no-nonsense attitude of hers. I never made things up to her. Now is my chance.”

“Dad, I just… I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“I want you to say that you support us.”

“I want you both to be happy. Whatever makes that your reality, do that.”

“Sweet potato fries and chocolate make me happy. I don’t know about them,” Anise mumbled.

I chuckled, turning in her direction. “I’m pretty sure that doesn’t make anybody happy but you.”

“Son, I’ll let you go. I just wanted…”

“Do it, Dad. I’ll support you both on whatever you need. I was talking to Anise about this chocolate ice cream and sweet potato fries concoction that she’s enjoying.”

“That sounds horrid.”

“That’s exactly how it looks. Go, Dad,” I encouraged.

“Thank you, Son. Tell my grandsons that I said hello.”

I chuckled. I’d texted my mother and father earlier to let them know where I was. They probably weren’t shocked to know that I was still here with her. There was just something I couldn’t deny that drew me to her. For now, I was going to roll with it, hoping it would work out.

“She doesn’t know the sexes, Dad.”

“They’re going to be the perfect lads,” Dad persisted.

Ten more minutes of that, before we finally got off the phone. My phone buzzed again with a reminder of some sort of ball. I clicked the link in the reminder and it took me to an invitation with details about the annual summer ball for the company I worked for. I walked over to Anise and showed her my phone.

“Oh, my god! This looks amazing!” Anise squealed.

“It’s something my job is hosting. Would you like to go?”

“Would I?! I’d love to! Can I be a princess since it’s in a castle?”

I chuckled and shook my head in disbelief. Who is this girl? “Absolutely.”

Cue more squealing. “Yes!”

And that is how we ended up RSVPing to the ball that was happening in two weeks.

Chapter Twenty-Five

RAPHAEL

"Are you ready?" Dr. L asked.

Fuck no. I guess it was necessary, though. "Whatever needs to happen."

The room seemed to grow warmer. Smaller.
