I smile at the fact, because while I knew everything was tattered and ruined, the bittersweetness of my arrival brought with it so many more prospects that I had never bargained for.

“We could still get married,” I tell him, my tone dipping lower as I slowly open my eyes and catch him unaware. “The truth to a long, successful marriage is separate beds and mutual hate. No one ever said love was part of the equation. We could still rule it all.”

The sound of his mirthless merriment rips through the night air.

“And you’d murder me in my sleep.”

I laugh, a little drunk on that idea.

“I’d do you one better.” I pull him closer, pushing the arousal between us up a notch. “I’d murder you while you were buried in me.”

He’s stunned into silence by that, but he made this playing field, and I’m too eager to play.

It’s all too easy to be the vixen, to drip with seduction and lure him in, even knowing there is no chance for us. This wicked world didn’t want us together anymore, and his actions—while confusing—proved he wanted me as far away from him as possible, so he could take the crown.

I was always his pawn, but little does he know, he’s now mine.

“So, where do we go from here, Beckett? I disappear with you, or I disappear without you.”

Via my death or my escape.

“You’re both disappearing.”

I turn my head; Beck’s hand drops from my throat and I find Andreas standing next to Sebastian. Andreas broke the moment, but Sebastian looks amused by it.

“Into your own fucking cars, that is,” Sebastian states, clearly agreeing with Andreas. “And we do this the proper way or not at all.”

“And what is the proper way, pray tell, Sebastian?” Beckett asks, pushing me away. “Because I could end this now.”

And he could. His hands could easily snap my neck with one slight motion.

“Not so publicly, you won’t.” Sebastian is the voice of reason still; why am I not surprised? “And not with her goon squad privy.”

Sebastian motions to where we parked and we both follow the direction to find Vinnie and a couple of my other men standing only a few feet away, looking ready to kill.

“Hey, fellas!” I chime, waving at them playfully. “He’s right… you touch me, darling boy, and you’ll join my father.”

The power balance shifts so quickly between us.

“And I know little ole me deserves everything she’s got coming to her because I’m the bad guy here, right?” I question rhetorically, unable to hide my sarcastic wit. “But the jokes are on you if you honestly thought I did nothing with my seven-year exoneration.”

I fall away from Beck, unable to read his expression, and know I want out of this situation.

“C’mon, Andreas. Let’s go home.”

Chapter Ten

BECKETT

It was deemed kismet when my mother fell pregnant at roughly the same time as Natalia’s.

Members of The Company thought it was planned.

Whispers and rumours ran amuck.

How serendipitous that two best friends who had stood beside one another through all of life’s lessons also had to endure parenthood together.

It seemed too good to be true.
