I could finally breathe. I could pull air into my lungs again. It burned the back of my throat, but I had no time to take stock of what he’d done to me. I had to get out from under the heaviness of his body. So I let the light drop onto the bed, the heavy base now cracked from the force I’d whacked him with, then pushed with all of my might to get him off of me.

He groaned and my stomach dipped. I couldn’t still be under him when he came around. I needed to get the hell out of here and away from him.

Counting to three in my head, I then pulled in another breath, and did one final shove to get him off of me.

It worked.

He rolled to the side, his body pushing into the headboard.

I jumped up off the bed, my shaking legs nearly coming out from under me as I swiped my phone off the floor—I had no idea when it had ended up there—and ran into my bathroom. The sound of the door slamming shut hurt my ears and I winced, causing my cheek to thump.

Shit. I didn’t have time to be in pain. I needed to get my stuff and get the hell out of here.

But where did I go? Who did I ask for help? Chief said I was on my own until they made contact with me, so I couldn’t go to him, not without potentially blowing my cover.

I slipped my legs into my pants while swinging my head around to stare at the bathroom door. I could hear his groaning getting louder, so I grabbed my gun, placed my back to the door, then unlocked my phone.

Who the hell should I call?

I scrolled through my recents, seeing Ronnie’s name at the top. He was my only option at this point, so I clicked on it and brought my phone up to my ear, hearing the ring tone.

“Come on, come on. Pick up, pick up.” I swiveled my head, gripping my gun tighter in my hand. If he came in here, I’d shoot, no questions asked.

“Hello?” My stomach dipped as the voice came over the line.

“I need help,” I whispered. “The guy from earlier is in my apartment.”

“What guy?” the voice asked, his tone deeper.

“The one who grabbed me at the meet.” Footsteps pounded from the other room. “Shit, he’s awake.” I tried to calm my breaths, but it felt almost impossible. “Please help me.”

“I know you’re in there, Lena!” he shouted, followed by pounding on my bathroom door. “Come out or I’ll break this fucking door down and get you myself.”

“Fuck!” I dropped my cell onto the floor, not caring that it clinked off the tiles, then held my gun with two hands. I wasn’t going to miss this shot, not if he made it in here. He pounded at the door again, pushing me forward, and I cursed myself for not having a more substantial lock on it.

I swallowed, trying not to think about the way it hurt my throat, then pushed off the door and backed up toward the toilet with my arms outstretched, the gun pointed straight at the door.

“I’ve got a gun!” I shouted, hoping the threat of it would deter him, but it didn’t because two seconds later, he kicked the door down and appeared in the doorway.

A stream of blood ran down the side of his face from a gash in the top of his head. The light had done some damage, but not enough to get me out of here.

I should have run out of the apartment and not in here.

Damn, my stupid thoughts. Even when I was staring the devil in the face, my brain wouldn’t stop.

“You made a mistake,” he warned, stepping forward. “And now you’re gonna pay for it.”

Chapter Four

THEO

I stayed in my office until the club was closing down, not wanting to be around anyone, especially my crew. Ronnie had fucked up big time. I knew he was still in the club, so I decided that I’d get more information from him before making my final decision on what his punishment would be. Because there would be consequences for his actions.

Cracking my neck side-to-side as I left my office and locked it behind me, I then made my way down to the now lit up club. My staff were cleaning tables and getting things stowed away behind the bar. There was only Ronnie and a couple more members of the crew left behind, but the staff knew that as long as I was there, they could stay after closing.

“Finally decided to make an appearance, huh?” Jared joked as I made my way to our usual booth. It was reserved permanently for me or any of the crew.

“Yeah,” I grunted, sitting on the edge right next to Ronnie. He kept his head down as he gripped a glass in his hands. “Need more intel on what went down tonight,” I told him, not bothering to make conversation with anyone else. There was no point, not when this was on my mind.
