“I fucked up,” he said, lifting his head. “I should have asked you first but…she was in a bind and I just wanted to help.”

I stared at him, trying to decipher if there was anything else behind what he was saying. “Plenty more ways to help other than inviting an unknown person to an exchange,” I reprimanded.

“I know.” He let out a breath and dipped his head back. “I fucked up big time.” He turned back to look at me. “Whatever you decide happens next, I’m good with it.”

My nostrils flared. I hated when someone stepped out of line. I wasn’t their fucking keepers, but I needed organization in the crew. They couldn’t be inviting just anyone inside of our inner circle.

“Go home. I need to think this through.” I stood so he could slip out of the booth. “I'll be in touch,” I told him, taking his seat.

“Got it.” He nodded, downed the rest of his drink, then placed the glass on the table. “Later.” With that, he walked across the empty dance floor and out of the exit.

Silence stretched out around me, that was until Jared cleared his throat.

“What are you gonna do?” Jared asked, but all I could do in response was shrug. I still had no idea. I still didn’t get why he’d invited her in. It didn’t sit well with me. That or the fact that I couldn’t get her light-green eyes out of my head. “He knows he fucked up,” Jared continued, but there was nothing I could say to him. Just because he knew it, didn’t mean he could get away with it.

I rolled my shoulders, trying to ease some of the tension. I needed to get my ass home. It was already early morning and I had stuff to do and things to decide ready for the next job. And I was possibly going to be one man down, so that was a headache I hadn’t needed.

“What the hell is buzzing?” Jared asked, scanning the booth.

I frowned, feeling it too. But it was closer to me, so I shuffled to the side, seeing Ronnie’s phone. “Ronnie forgot his phone,” I commented, picking it up and seeing Lena’s name flashing on the screen.

Staring at it, I wasn’t sure whether to answer or not. But maybe she was calling him for a reason. Maybe she wanted to make sure that he was okay and that I hadn’t killed him. I knew my reputation preceded me, and for the first time ever, I wanted someone to know that I wasn’t all bad.

So I clicked the answer button. “Hello?”

“I need help,” she frantically whispered. “The guy from earlier is in my apartment.”

My eyes widened as energy zapped through me. “What guy?”

“The one who grabbed me at the meet.” Her sharp intake of breath came over the line. “Shit, he’s awake. Please help me.”

“I know you’re in there, Lena!” I heard shouted. “Come out or I’ll break this fucking door down and get you myself.”

“Fuck!” she shouted.

“Lena?” I stood. “Lena, what the fuck is happening?”

I didn’t bother to look at the guys in the booth because my feet were already carrying me out of the club, my instincts kicking in. The guy from the exchange was in her apartment, and I knew this meant she wouldn’t be leaving there alive if I didn’t do something about it.

“Lena?” I shouted again, but she wasn’t answering. I spun around, seeing Jared only a few steps behind me. “Get her address. I need it ASAP.”

“On it,” he grunted.

I spun around, practically running out of the exit and toward my black sports car parked in the parking lot around back.

“I’ve got a gun!” I heard her say. My stomach dipped, my pulse thrumming as my heart raced as I made it into my car and put Ronnie’s phone on speaker. The engine roared to life and as soon as I squealed out of the lot, my center console lit up with an incoming call from Jared.

He reeled off the address to me and I headed in that direction, running every red light that I could.

“You made a mistake. And now you’re gonna pay for it.”

Fuck.

I was still several minutes out. I couldn’t get there in time. But she had a gun…

Did she even know how to use it?

“No,” she ground out. “Take another step and I’ll shoot you.”
