“No, Bug, I could never kiss you.” The words haunt me through the night. I can hardly sleep. Whenever I close my eyes, her shattered look hovers in my memory. The look of shock. The look of rejection and humiliation.

If only she knew how much this hurt me.

If only she knew how much more it would be than just a kiss.

Kissing her would cause an earthquake neither of us were ready for.

All of her friends had already left for the night. I was cleaning up the remnants of the food and drinks before I left when Skylar hugged me and thanked me for coming to her party. She then asked if she could have her present.

“Present? I gave you the present last week on your birthday.”

She shrugged. “I know, but you can’t come to a birthday party without a present.”

“That’s news to me.” I laughed.

She put a hand on my chest and looked up at me. “How about a kiss for my dirty mouth?”

My eyes went wide. All night long, I had been trying to ignore what her comment did to me. It brought the fireworks back to my stomach. It hardened my cock. It made my head spin with need. Her voice replayed in my head. I may have a dirty mouth, but I can do amazing things with it.

“No, Bug, I could never kiss you.” I leaned in and kissed her forehead as I always have. Fuck. Honestly, what I wanted to say was I can’t. If I start kissing you, I won’t be able to stop.

Tears sprung to her eyes. She pushed away from me and ran upstairs, slamming her bedroom door.

Ouch.

James came around the corner and asked what the noise was. I told him it was nothing and said I needed to leave for the night.

Before I reached the door, his voice rang out again, “I’m sure she’s still upset. She’ll come around.”

I nodded because there was nothing to say to him. How could I tell my best friend that I wanted his daughter? How could I tell my best friend that his daughter was coming on to me? And that I liked it. How could I tell my best friend that I wanted to do all the dirty things imaginable to his innocent little girl?

Deep down, I knew she was not an innocent little girl. She was my Bug: something that annoys the shit out of you all time, but then the more time you spend with it, it kinda starts to grow on you. She was the kind trouble I yearned for. She’s the exact kind of trouble I craved.

Chapter Fifteen

SKY

A YEAR LATER…

Graduation was a few weeks ago. It felt good to be done with school. I graduated Valedictorian with my parents and Uncle Davey sitting in the front row. Part of my speech was dedicated to him because without those dinner debates and early morning runs, I would not be where I am. Uncle Davey had challenged me in so many ways, and I greatly admired him. He has been my biggest cheerleader, even though he hasn’t been around much these past two years. When I gave my speech, I looked directly at him and saw nothing but happiness radiating from him.

Happiness was a rare sight with him these past few years. I made a move on him and hoped for something special. I was shot down. Our relationship has been strained ever since I followed him to the masked club and confessed my true feelings to him.

On my birthday, I was shot down again yet again. But I’m a smart cookie. The time has come to have what I have been craving since I was a child. And that’s David.

That time is now.

The melodious symphony flows quietly through the stereo while I lay on my bed reading a book. My cell phone rings, jarring me out of the story.

Olivia and I talk about our night plans, and she coaxes me into going to a party with her. We agree that she’ll pick me up at 8.

I hang up the phone and roll over onto my back. A small party would be nice. I’ve spent way too much time studying and working late. I’d been picking up a couple of extra shifts at the diner this summer. Waiting tables was hard work, but it was rewarding. Now that graduation is over, I need a well-deserved break. The fall semester is quickly approaching, so I need to take my breaks when I can.

I pick up my book and read a few more chapters before putting it down. Looking at the clock, I realize that over an hour has passed already. It’s time to get ready for the party.
