“Honey, you’re not going to like what I’m about to say, but I need you to really hear me.”

I sigh and lean against the car. “Out with it.”

“Skylar will always be your little girl, but she’s matured now. She’s not so little anymore; she’s grown up. As much as we don’t want to believe it, she is capable of making her own decisions. I’ve talked to her, and I’ve seen the way she looks at him. I’ve seen that look many times. She loves him.”

“Right, she’s eighteen. What the hell does she know about love?” My fists are clenched by my side.

“You. She knows you. She knows everything we’ve taught her. You’ve set a great example for her about what kind of relationship she should want to be in. We have set that example for her. We’ve raised her right, and she knows what’s right and what’s not. I have faith in her; you should too.”

“What if I can’t?”

“You need to, James. She deserves her chance at happiness. We can’t tell her who she can and cannot love.” Jessica stands up and walks over to me. “Let her be happy and make her own decisions. If it fails, then you can kill him.”

That was something I didn’t expect. My damn wife. I reach out and grab her arm, pulling her close to me. I dip my head to kiss her.

She cuts it short and heads back into the house. “I’m going to take a bath and lie down.” Right before she closes the door, she looks over her shoulder and winks at me.

Chapter Twenty-Two

SKY

A shocked face greets me when the door opens.

“Bug? What are you doing here?” Concern flashes across his eyes. “Is everything okay?”

“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” I give him a big smile and wave to Olivia behind me, telling her it is okay to leave.

“You shouldn’t be here.” David shakes his head.

I shifted my weight onto my other foot. “Please,” I insist softly.

He opens the door wider and steps back. I walk through the door and take a look around. I’ve never actually been to his place yet. I stole his address from my mom’s planner, grabbed Olivia, and here I am.

“I like your house. It looks nice.” I spin around in place.

“You didn’t answer me. What are you doing here?”

I shrugged. “I missed you, and I needed to see you. Is that so bad?”

He shakes his head again. “Come on, Bug. Let me take you home. You really shouldn’t be here.”

“No. You haven’t been answering my calls or my texts. I’ve been worried about you, David.” I rake my eyes down his body and bite my lower lip. Taking a step closer to him, I whisper, “Haven’t you been thinking about me too?”

I watch as he breathes in and out, debating on how to answer.

“Of course, I have, Bug.” He lowers his gaze and looks at the floor. “You need to leave, Skylar. Now.”

“David.” His name falls from my lips in a breathy whisper. “Please.” I look at him with tears in my eyes, only to find a storm brewing in his.

He reaches out to grab my arm and catches my hand instead. A bolt of lightning shoots through me, and I gasp. He tugs me into him and smashes his lips against mine. Our tongues meld together like they are meant for the other. Everything else is a distant memory now. David spins me around and slams the door close, pushing me against it.

Groaning, he stops our kiss. “What are we doing, Skylar?”

“We’re doing whatever you’d like.”

“That’s my good girl.”

My body hums with excitement. I raise my hand to his cheek and cradle his head in my palm. “Oh, David.”
