“Is there a point here? Do you need help getting to the interesting parts?”

“I think you killed your father. You wanted what he built and took it, then blamed it on someone else.”

My fist connects with his jaw before he has the chance to spit out any other nonsense. He falls backward, hitting the ground. My hands grip the front of his shirt, lifting him off the ground and placing him on the wooden chair. He struggles to free himself from my grip, his eyes flashing wildly. Pulling my belt free, I wrap it around his throat and loop it around the last support on the back. Lucian tries to stand but can’t without cutting off his air supply. His hands pull against the leather at his throat, trying and failing to free himself.

“Where are the girls?” I ask again.

He sneers, “Go fuck yourself.”

I punch him square in the stomach, forcing the air from his lungs.

“Where?” I ask once more.

He wheezes out another fuck you, and I hit him again, once in his stomach and then in the middle of his face. His nose cracks under my fist. Blood pours down his face, over his lips, and down his neck.

“You think you’re so fucking smart. This isn’t over. You can kill me, but then you’ll never figure it out. You think this was about you? You weren’t even a piece on the board when the game began.”

“Enlighten me then. If this isn’t your petty revenge, what is it?”

He laughs, flinching at the pain. “Big, bad King. You always did think the world revolved around you.”

I take a special pleasure in beating him senseless. Piss runs down his leg, soaking his jeans, yet I don’t stop. My knuckles are covered in blood. His... mine. I don’t care. My vision is hazed in red and focused on making him pay.

“St–stop.”

My arm pauses inches from his face.

“I–I’ll... someone paid me. That’s all I know. Please don’t kill me.”

I chuckle. “Begging again, Lucy? What would my father think?”

Stepping away from him, I wipe my hand down my pants, ignoring the biting pain. “Who paid you?”

“I... I don’t know.”

“That’s too bad. I might have let you live.” Pulling the gun from my waist, I aim and fire one shot. It hits him in the middle of the forehead. His head ricochets back and doesn’t move again.

The girls are in a small supply closet at the back of the warehouse. Their hands, feet, and mouths are still duct taped, and their eyes are swollen from crying. Other than that, I don’t see any physical damage. “Are you able to stand?” I ask, pulling the tape from their feet first. Erin nods, but Dani stares straight ahead in shock or fear.

I pull Erin to her feet and tear the tape at her wrists so she can begin the task of peeling the tape from her face. It’s wrapped around her head several times, and I don’t want to cause her unneeded pain by pulling gobs of hair from her head. Once Erin is out, I repeat the same process for Dani. She stands on her own but makes no move to free the tape from her face. “Is she all right? Did he... ?”

“No. He planned to, but he was more focused on getting all of us here first. I think she’s in shock or something. She’ll come out of it... I hope.”

I nod and lift Dani in my arms, carrying her toward the front where my car waits. When we reach the room with Lucian, I slow, blocking Erin’s view of the room as we pass. Once outside, Dani comes alive in my arms, flailing and moaning around the tape. I set her down and wait as Erin assists her with freeing her mouth.

Once finished, Erin turns to me. “Did you call the police? Shouldn’t someone be here to take him away?”

I select my words carefully when responding. “No. I don’t deal with the police in my line of work. If you feel the need to report this, I understand. I only ask that you keep my involvement in this a secret.”

“But what if he comes back?”

“Lucian isn’t going after anyone ever again. I promise you that.”

She weighs my words, then understanding flashes across her blue eyes. “I don’t think we need to involve the cops. As long as you’re sure.”

“I’m positive.”

“Then I say we leave this dump and never look back.”
