Chapter Nine

ROOSTER

The whir of the elevator motor caught my attention, and I slipped my phone in my pocket. I did wonder for a second if it could have been another resident using it, but I brushed that aside knowing that Jez would be down soon, regardless. I was glad the building’s security was good enough that nobody could get in the elevator without a key-fob—unless you were coming down to the exit, then there was no fob needed—but it was a little bit of an inconvenience when I was a welcomed guest and just wanted to be in the same space as the beauty I’d met last night.

The doors opened with a ping and said beauty stepped forward and grabbed me by the shirt tugging me into the metal box. I went willingly and let her spin me, shoving my back against the steel wall as she pressed her lips against mine.

“Mmm…I’ve been thinking about doing this all day,” she whispered as she pulled back leaving a hairsbreadth between our lips before claiming my lips once again. I brushed my tongue against the seam of her mouth and took over the kiss as she opened for me.

After a good minute of devouring her mouth, I pulled away. “You do realise we aren’t going anywhere?” I nodded towards the panel of numbers on the wall beside me which had no number lit up.

Jez laughed as she pulled her keys out of her back pocket and swiped it at the reader under the numbers. “I knew I’d forgotten something,” she said sheepishly as she pressed the button for her level.

“It wouldn’t bother me if we stayed in here making out all night.” I ran the back of my knuckle along her jaw. “Although your neighbours would probably get a little more than they bargained for if they decide to take a ride in the elevator at all tonight,” I added with a smirk as the elevator started move.

Jez pulled me into her apartment but didn’t pounce on me like she had in the elevator. Instead, she released my hand and walked into the kitchen. “Would you like a drink?” she offered as she waved a half empty bottle of Tequila at me.

“I’d take something a little less potent. Do you have any beer in there?” I asked nodding towards the large silver fridge.

She smirked at me as she pulled a bottle out the fridge. “I never thought a big tough guy like you would find Tequila too hard for you.”

I laughed. “Tequila’s the devils work. Everybody knows that. You should only drink it when the days been that bad you can no longer see the risk.”

Jez pressed her lips together and nodded. “That’s true, and it’s been one of those days for me.”

“Sweetness, you started the day in bed with a handsome man and if all goes well, you’ll end your day like that too.” I gave her a raised brow, daring her to disagree. I thought she was into me as much as I was her, but maybe I’d read her all wrong.

She strolled up to me and placed her hands on my chest, sliding them up and around my neck before pressing a chaste kiss against my lips. “It’s what happened between those two amazing parts of the day that I needed the devil’s potion for. My Dad has been meddling in my life, worse than I’d ever have imagined.”

I cradled her face in my hands and tipped her head slightly so I could look in her pretty eyes. “Do you want to talk about it? My sister is always telling me talking through the shit stuff and getting it off your chest, often makes things better.”

Jez gave me a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Nah, I’d much rather hang with you and forget about my father altogether.”

Hanging. I could do that. Hell, I wanted to do that. There was something about the beautiful girl before me that made me want to have more than just a physical relationship with her. I wanted something emotional too. Which was a fucking first for me. I gave her a warm smile and pressed a kiss on her forehead before I glanced around the room and spotting the TV paused on some Netflix show, I pulled her towards the couch.

“Let’s find something to binge watch.”

We got comfortable together on the couch, Jez cuddled into my side, her head resting on my chest.

Picking up the remote, Jaz flicked through the movie section. “Any preferences? Romcom? Action? Thriller?”

I gave her an assessing look, wondering whether to just go with the typical option of action or be open and give her a little insight into me. I’ve never really done that before with a chick but even though I’ve only known her a short time this feels different. And it seems like this moment is important.

“What?” She asked. “Is there something wrong with my face?”

“No. You look as beautiful as ever. I’m just wondering how good you are at keeping secrets?”

Jez lifted her head to look at me square on and ran her hand over my chest. “It depends… How secret are we talking?”

I grinned, loving her playfulness. “It could mean life or death.”

Jez’s eyes widened but I could still see the humour in them. “That is serious stuff. Well, in that case I’m like a vault. Your secret will be safe with me.”

I pulled my lip between my teeth and even though this was all in fun I was still a little nervous about being so honest. “I quite enjoy Romcoms and I’ve wanted to watch that one for ages,” I admitted as I pointed to the screen which currently showed one romcom in the top three movie spot, surrounded by a heap of action movies.

A crease formed in her brow as she searched my face, no doubt trying to work out if I was being serious. “A man in touch with his sensitive side. I can’t say I see that often. Maybe you are just what I’ve been looking for.” Jez leaned up and slipping a hand into my hair she pulled me in for a heated kiss. She groaned as she ripped her mouth away from mine. “Fuck, if we don’t stop now, we’ll never get to watch your movie. And we can’t have that.” She patted as my chest as she settled back against me and selected my choice. I watched her out the corner of my eye as the introductory scene started and was amazed at how right things between us felt. It was like I was exactly where I was meant to be.
