The door handle twisted, and I rushed to grab it at my side holding it closed with all my might. “Everything alright out there, Sweetness?” Remy called, concern lacing his words.

“Yeah, I just elbowed the door. I’ll be in in a sec.” I tried to hide my panic behind a cheery tone, but the way Cole was looking at me I could tell I wasn’t doing a great job at it.

“Look I know you have company,” his eyes roamed over my body, and I realised for the first time since stepping out the door that I was wearing nothing but Remy’s white t-shirt. “I can see you don’t want what’s being suggested. Hell, I don’t even know if I really want it. You’re right when you say we don’t even know each other anymore.” He sighed and glanced over at his bag. “It’s late and I don’t really have anywhere else to go right now. Is there any chance I can crash on your couch just for tonight and when I wake up, I’ll work something else out?”

Cole was new in town so probably hadn’t had a chance to make any friends yet, and it wasn’t like he could go back to the clubhouse without my father kicking off, not if he’d ordered Cole to come here in the first place. I rolled my eyes and let out a huff. “Fine. But I’ll be speaking with my father tomorrow and putting an end to this shit.”

I didn’t want to stay in the same apartment as him on our own, even though I didn’t think he’d try anything against my will. I bit at my lip as an idea came to mind.

“Let me just go talk to…” I trailed off not knowing what to call Remy. We hadn’t been dating long enough to call him my boyfriend, but it wasn’t like Cole knew that.

“Your guy,” Cole finished for me as he waved absently at the door behind me.

I nodded and slipped back into the apartment without another word.

Chapter Eleven

ROOSTER

As soon as the door clicked shut behind Jez, I mentally kicked myself. Why the fuck hadn’t I just kept quiet? I was deep in Vulture territory and trying to stay anonymous and alive. Making my presence known to someone saying he’d been sent by Blaze, Prez of the Vultures, was fucking reckless.

I was still berating myself when I heard a thud against the door and shot up off the couch. Had the pushy fucker hit her or something? I rushed over to the door not caring that I was still in just my boxers as I twisted the door handle. There was resistance on the other side and my concern started to rise. “Everything alright out there, Sweetness?” I kept my voice calm even though I felt anything but.

Her reply was bullshit, it didn’t take a genius to know that thud was too loud to be an elbow against the wood. I pulled on my jeans and paced the space behind the door. I was arguing with myself about whether I should just barge out there and make sure the fucker hadn’t hit her when the door opened, and Jez re-entered the apartment.

I flicked my eyes over her body, before focusing on her face to make sure there weren’t any signs of assault. “Are you okay?”

Jez stepped up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist, pressing her cheek against my chest. “Yeah. Cole’s an old friend and new in town. He wants to crash on the couch.”

I had the urge to shout ‘no fucking way’ but it wasn’t like I was her boyfriend. I had no right to tell her who could and couldn’t stay in her apartment.

“I know this probably sounds weird but is there any chance I could stay at yours tonight?” She looked up at me pleading eyes that I’d never be able to say no to, but she carried on talking before I could answer. “It’s okay if not. I have a friend who lives on the floor below me, she’d probably let—”

I pressed a kiss to her lips to shut her up. “I’d love for you to come back to my place. I live with my sister, but she’ll be in bed now. So as long as we are quiet there’ll be no problems there.”

“Thank you.” Jez briefly squeezed me tighter before taking a step back. “I’ll just get dressed and grab a change of clothes for the morning and then we can go. Here…” she offered, as she whipped my t-shirt over her head and threw it at me. My dick turned rock hard as I watched her naked arse sway as she walked towards her bedroom.

It wasn’t long before Jez was pulling open her front door and shoving me towards the elevator. “I’m gonna stay at Remy’s for the night so the apartment is all yours,” she said as she slammed her palm against the button to call the elevator.

“Fuck, Jezzy. I didn’t mean to chase you out of your home.” The guy sounded genuine and miserable about the whole situation. So much so that I was tempted to check him out but the need to hide my face in case he’d recognise me was slightly more pressing than my curiosity over the guy’s feelings.

The elevator doors opened, and we stepped inside. “It’s all good Cole. It’s not your fault.” The way she said that had me wondering whose fault it was, but I didn’t want to pry, her nerves seemed frayed, and I didn’t want to push her any more than she already had been tonight.

“Where did you park?” She asked as the elevator made its way down to the carpark.

“Right next to your bike. Do you wanna ride with me or follow behind?”

She chewed in the inside of her cheek as she came to her decision. “I’ll follow. That way you won’t have to drop me back in the morning.”

I wanted nothing more than to have her pressed against my back on the back of my bike where she belonged, but it seemed like she’d made up her mind and I wasn’t going to force her into changing her mind. It seems like she’d been manipulated enough tonight, what with her Dad’s meddling that she’d hinted at earlier and the pushy fucker who turned up just now.

I helped Jez put on her helmet, not that she needed it because she was pretty apt at doing it herself. She didn’t fight me, so I took that as a win. I mounted my bike and shouted to her over the rev of our engines. “Stay close, I don’t want to lose you at any lights.”

The house was quiet and dark when we walked in, and if the door had been locked, I would’ve been wondering if Laci was even home. I led Jez straight to my room so not to disturb my sister and flicked the lamp beside my bed on instead of the main light, wanting to keep things intimate.

“Wow.” Jez turned in a circle taking in my room as she pulled off her leather jacket and placed it over the chair in the corner. “It’s clean. Is that thanks to your sis or you?”

“I’ve became my sisters guardian when I was twenty-three. Social workers dropped in regularly without much warning and I learnt quickly that a clean house meant a pleasant visit. It also meant we got stay together. I wasn’t jeopardising that to keep my bachelor ways.” I shrugged, hoping to hide my defensive tone behind the dismissive gesture. I didn’t like to talk about the past, and the fact that I’d even brought it up with Jez terrified me because it meant I was feeling things for this woman I hadn’t even known two minutes, things I’d never felt for anyone before. She made me feel comfortable. It was almost like there was a kinship between us. My sister would suggest we were soul mates, but I still was certain I believed in such a thing.
