Standing up, I walk to the dress I was wearing last night and start to pull it on. I suddenly am not in the mood to be naked.

He’s staring at something on his laptop, and I walk over to him and close the screen.

“What do you want, Katarina?” He asks, annoyed.

“I want you to talk to me!” I cry, my anger starting to get the best of me.

“There’s nothing to talk about. Our deal is done. Transaction complete.”

He stands up and starts to walk away, but I step in front of him. Without thinking, I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him. For a moment, he kisses me back, and he holds me close as we get lost in each other. I’d like to believe he realizes how right this feels, but I quickly realize he’s saying goodbye.

Dominic is the one to break the kiss, and when he does, he says, “Go home, Katarina. John is waiting outside to take you to the airport.”

With that, he’s gone. I watch him walk out of my life for good.

Sighing, I grab my backpack and the suitcase.

The asshole can’t even take me to the airport himself.

Chapter Twenty-One

KATARINA

It’s been two days since I arrived back in Atlantic City, and I have been walking around in a fog ever since. The moment I stepped onto Dominic’s plane, I let my tears freely fall, and I cried the whole way home. Since then, I’ve just felt numb.

I know Dominic and I only had a week together; it was all supposed to be fun…and temporary. But our week together somehow ended up meaning more than I thought possible. Despite all of his flaws, Dominic made me fall in love with him.

He runs through my mind as I drive to my Dad’s to check on him. I dropped off the money to the bookie almost immediately when I got home. I didn’t want that much cash hanging around my apartment.

When I get to his shit-hole of a house, I head inside, and I find my father already half-drunk in his recliner.

“Jesus, Dad, it’s one in the afternoon,” I mumble, picking up some of the empty beer bottles.

Clanking the bottles together is enough noise to wake him up. “Hey, Kat,” he says, slowly sitting up. “What are you doing here?”

“Well, you haven’t returned my calls the past couple of days. I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“Oh, I’m fine. Just…been busy.”

Translation: I’ve been too drunk to know where my phone is, let alone answer it.

He looks up at me. “You don’t look so good, Kat. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I’m fine. Just in case you didn’t get my messages, I wanted to let you know that I paid off your debt to Vinny.”

He smiles. “Thanks, princess. How’d you get the money?”

“It’s not important. I just called in some favors,” I lie. There’s no way I’m telling my dad about the past week.

“You must know some pretty powerful people,” he chuckles.

“Something like that.”

He pauses for a moment as if his next words will be hard for him to get out. I figure he’s going to thank me—truly thank me for bailing his ass out yet again.

But instead, he says, “Do you think maybe your powerful friends might come through again?”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I spit.
