“I can explain. I needed the money, and I got mixed u—”

“You better hope Parker fucking Judd gets to you before I do. That's me breaking up with you, by the way.” My anger begins to turn to thick emotion and my eyes fill with tears. “I’ve lost everything,” I choke.

“Avery, I’m sorry.”

“I hate you.” I sob.

“Avery! We can work this out. I’m at Hyde Park, baby,” Simon’s voice murmurs through the speaker before Seth cuts him off, effectively ending the call.

I rattle the cuffs.

“Get them off!”

“Good luck with that.” Ryan laughs as he slaps Jamieson on the shoulder, then walks towards the way he came in. Leaving Jamieson to deal with my meltdown.

Seth soon follows after him.

“Get these fucking cuffs off!” I scream at Jamieson, yanking at the cuffs. Strong arms restrain me, holding me against his chest. I fight and buck, but he doesn’t let up. I’m too exhausted to continue. I sag in his embrace, panting wildly.

“He would have got you killed,” he snaps. “You can hate me for now, bu—”

I buck, head-butting his lip. Jamieson roars and yanks my face to his.

“I’m the only thing keeping you alive. So you’re fucking welcome,” he bellows in my face.

Silence spreads between us, and I bite my lip, aware he is telling the truth, his actions just now proving that to be the case. Parker would have killed me if Jamieson wasn’t protecting me. I hate to admit it, but I’m probably far safer in this apartment than I am out on the streets. How could Simon do this to me? Send me into a situation, knowing full well the type of outcome it could bring.

“I’m tired,” I whisper, twisting out of his grip.

“I know.” His soft tone tells me he knows I don't just mean physically. I hate that he can sense that. “I’m going to fucking kill him,” he vows.

“I don't want to hear how easy it is for you to kill people.” I shudder, remembering Jeff’s face. “Why are you doing this? What’s in it for you? Why are you protecting me?” I frantically search his gaze, trying to catch out his usual blank expression.

His fingers trail through my hair and then run along my collarbone.

“Because I’m fucking selfish, Blue. Remember that.” He frowns, and I get the distinct feeling that Jamieson is doubting his decision to keep me here. He removes the cuffs and steers me back upstairs towards the bedroom and lifts the quilt. “Get in.”

“I want to call my parents. Please.” I sniff.

“Tomorrow. Get in, Avery.” Hard green eyes stare at me. I drop down on the bed and scramble away when he lies down, too.

“NO!”

“Like I need to force that. You’ll come to me yourself.” He yanks me backwards and wraps his arms around me. Like fuck I will. “Go to sleep.”

“I can—” I yawn, and he answers with a hum.

“I promise you are safe. Sleep.”

It doesn't take long for my eyes to start drooping. My exhaustion is heavier than dried cement, my body begging for a rest. I slip off, hearing Jamieson vow to keep me safe.

Chapter Six

JAMIESON

TWO WEEKS LATER

Lights dance and music pulses around me. Usually, I would be lapping up the attention or trying to find a woman to take home with me. Instead, I knock back a shot as my brothers flirt incessantly on either side of me, and when a woman struts towards me, I lift my finger to stop her.
