All heads bow as they swear their loyalty to me. I never wanted to be alpha, but I understand these people need me.

Chapter Fourteen

ROSE

ONE MONTH LATER

Adding the root of ginger to the pot, I stir it with my wooden spoon. The colour changes from sky blue to vibrant orange, and I smile at my triumph. I walk around the cauldrons to check the liquids have all changed to the same colour. “Good job, guys,” I say to my students.

“I hope nobody turns into a frog this time,” Alice, one of my youngest pupils, says.

“We’re all still learning, me included,” I say with a wink, making her cross her fingers.

I laugh softly, hoping nothing goes wrong this time too. I have more faith than Alice, but we’re not experts. Every witch and warlock has had the opportunity to learn magic since I made the magic books available in our library. I’ve been teaching this class for a week now, so it’s still early days.

“Rose, we need you to come quickly,” Clary says, trying to catch her breath.

“I told you I’d help feed the animals after my class. Did one of the horses escape again?” I ask.

“No. It’s much worse.” She frowns.

I touch her arm, unable to hide my concern. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s the prince. He’s here.” She staggers forward to hold on to a hay bail.

My heart beats fast. Has he come for me? “He won’t harm us,” I say, trying to reassure her.

“I hope you’re right.” She rubs her thigh.

“Where is he?”

“At the gate.” She points to the entrance.

“Okay. I’ll go see what he wants. Please take a seat and calm down. I’ll be fine dealing with him.”

She sits down to rest.

I take a slow walk down to the edge of our territory so I can collect my thoughts. By the time I reach the gate, it seems the whole coven has come to see what’s happening. “Let him in,” I say, loud enough for the guards to hear.

“He might be dangerous,” one of them replies.

“Not to me,” I say confidently. Titan never truly hurt me.

The wood starts to move, and he comes into view. His bruises are gone, and he looks as well as the first time I laid eyes on him. There is something different, though, and I don’t mean his clothes.

He bows. “Milady.”

Warmth fills my belly. I’ve missed him more than I realised. The tables have turned, and he’s in my court now.

“Prince Titan. What a surprise,” I say, trying to keep my cool. I have so many questions, but I need to let him explain his visit first.

“I’ve come to return something that belongs to you.”

“Is that all? You could’ve sent anyone to do that.” I’m disappointed he isn’t here for me.

“Come now, Milady. I’m not one to miss the action. Besides, I wouldn’t get to see your pretty face again then, would I?”

My heart beats a little quicker, and I try to push down the foolish thought he might be missing me too. “What did you bring?” I ask.
