LONDON’S REMEDY

An Unintentional Affair

Chapter One

ANISE

Three years ago…

"Can you explain how that works?"

"Sure. We overbooked the flight and if you choose to catch a different one and give up your seat, we'll give you a voucher."

"What’s the voucher for?"

"Any flight up to the credit of the voucher for a future departure. It will be good until the expiration of one year."

"For how much?"

"Right now, we're up to five hundred dollars."

"They just raised it to seven-fifty," the clerk beside her interjected.

"Okay," she chuckled, "Seven-fifty."

"When is the next flight?"

"Let me see your itinerary."

I handed her my boarding passes, and she got busy typing away. She wrote some things down and slid me a mock-up itinerary. I'd get home at around 3 am.

"Wait. This says LAX."

"Yes, we'd get you transportation there. It’s about an hour and a half from here."

"You're paying for both the transportation and the voucher?"

"Yes."

"Deal!"

She laughed and started making my arrangements. I still had to sit and wait to make sure that no open seats became available as everyone boarded. When all the seats were filled, she called me back up to the desk and handed me my new itinerary. Another guy joined me at the desk and I smiled politely.

"Do you guys mind riding together, or I can get you separate taxis?" She looked between the two of us, waiting for a response.

"I'm okay with riding together," the man beside me responded.

"Me too." She handed us information just as a man wheeled a cart with our luggage inside.

"Hello, my name is Ted. If you guys will follow me, I'll get you set up with the taxi," he said.

We followed, stopping just outside the taxi while Ted gave the instructions to the driver.

“I’m Raphael,” said my companion for the next hour and a half.

I looked over to see his outstretched hand. “I’m Anise.”
