As I turned around to tell Kellie what Troy said she had her tongue down one of the guy's throats. “Kell?”

“They look a bit busy to me,” I think it was Stuart that answered me.

“Great.”

“You know I can take you home…” His eyes darkened and he dragged a finger down my arm.

“No thanks,” I shrugged away from him and stepped back. As he approached me, my back hit the wall. I watched closely as he lifted his hand, his fingers tightly cupped my jaw and he leant forward. “Just a kiss, that’s all I want.”He shrugged as if it was nothing.

“No.” I tried to bat his hand away but his arm and his grip tightened even more. “Kell,” I shouted but I got no reply, I swallowed and placed my other hand on his chest and tried to push him away.

“You know you shouldn’t wear dresses like this if you don’t want attention.”

“Get away from me. I can wear whatever I fucking want.”

“You’re a fucking tease!” He reached his other hand down and his fingers bit into my thigh. I took him by the wrist but he didn’t release me. He crashed his lips against mine, they were hard and they tasted disgusting. I shoved hard at his chest but he wasn’t budging so I lifted my leg and pushed it between his and kneed him hard. I managed to get him square in the balls, “Argh. You bitch.”

“Stay the fuck away from me.” I balled.

“Kellie!” I turned away to shout at my friend, I don’t know what happened after that. The guy was knocked to the floor and as I looked up, Troy was towering over him, his face like thunder. Kellie stepped up beside me, her chin almost on the floor from shock.

His eyes softened a tad as he focused on me. “Get in the car. Both of you.”

Chapter Fourteen

TROY

I stood in the doorway and watched her curl her legs up and tuck them beneath her. She stared blankly at the dead fire, and I wondered whether I should go to her. I’d pulled her mother’s things downstairs while she was out. I saw her face turn into the back cushioning of the armchair and her eyes started to close. I stepped further into the room and took the fleece throw from the back of the couch and gently laid it over her. I smoothed the hair on her head and leant down to brush a soft kiss on her head. She snuggled further down into the chair and tucked the blanket around her.

My phone had been next to me all night. Every time a message came through, I was itching to read it and reply. The woman had me on a constant cliff edge. I wanted to make her happy. I wanted to look after her, not that she needed it, but I’d waited a long time to have her beneath me again. I’ve changed from before. I had no intention of hurting her again. Not intentionally anyway.

As I watched her sleep, I wanted to wrap her in my arms and hold her. When I saw that guy touching her, I felt deadly. My blood bubbled with temper, to the point I thought it was her that was punishing me, at least not until I saw her shove him away. I’d been on the receiving end of that push, and I knew she meant it. I abandoned the car at the curb and got out, dragged him away from Emily and hit him. He hit the deck but kicked out at me, so I booted him. That’s when I looked up and saw Emily, wide eyed and looking scared.

The drive home was quiet, Kellie got out at her house and Emily waved from the front seat. She watched out the window the whole ride home.

I got up and grabbed the bottle of Famous Grouse from the mini bar, a glass and took it back to the couch to pour myself a double. The bottle clinked with the glass as I poured and my gaze went straight to Emily. I wanted to wake her up but I couldn’t do that, instead I sipped on my Grouse slowly.

She still wasn’t awake when I’d finished and rather than pour another, I went over and gently lifted her into my arms. She snuggled her head against my shoulder. I kept the blanket wrapped around her and carried her upstairs and laid her down on the bed. I tried to take her dress off but it was too tight to drag off while she was still asleep. I left the throw over her in case the sheets were cold and tugged the duvet over her.

With my own clothes off I slipped in next to her.

Halfway through the night I woke up and Emily wasn't in bed. I squinted as I reached over to put the lamp on and saw it was almost four-thirty. Once my eyes had adjusted to the light I got out of bed and pulled on my joggers. I took the stairs carefully since I still wasn’t properly awake. When I reached the bottom, I went to the kitchen first but it was in darkness so I went to the next room, the living room. I heard sniffling coming from there and went inside. “Em?”

She looked up and I saw her red-rimmed eyes. She was sitting on the floor with the trunk of her mother’s things. I walked over and stood at her side. “Do you mind?” she shook her head and I sat beside her.

“This is so hard. It’s like losing her all over again. Why didn’t my dad give me these before he died - I don’t understand.”

I had no answer for her. There were a lot of things Mitch did that even I didn’t understand. She reached inside and pulled out a small box, when she opened it there was an engagement ring, a necklace, and loose photos. There was also a photo album. She pushed backwards and leaned her back against the couch and flipped the pages.

Seeing Emily as a young girl made me smile. “You were cute,” I stated as she stood in a pretty dress and long curly blonde locks.

“Cute, is that all?” She asked as she turned to me.

“I think you’re prettier now,” I pinched her chin softly between my finger and thumb.

“I’m not sure I can do this anymore, Troy.”

“What? What do you mean?”
