Lies In Powder

CASSANDRA CRIPPS

Chapter One

Sweat pools on my upper lip. I close my eyes, trying to slow my heart.

Please, don't let him see.

My bare feet stick to the dirty floor. I don’t dare move them. Not when he might see. I can hear him only a few feet away.

A cough rises in the back of my throat, itching to come out. I hold it in, refusing to swallow.

One small breath. Then another.Don’t move.

My thin nightgown sticks to my legs as he stalks closer.

I stand still. Not moving even though I want to throw up and run away.

Daddy’s fingers trace up my belly. I wish Mamãe were here and not working.

“Did you wash youself nice and clean?” His breath smells like stale cigarettes. Always like icky beer and cigarettes. Then his hand dips down low, to the edge of my frayed, pink panties. “What about down here? Did you clean down here?”

I swallow and nod. I cleaned extra good, everywhere I could see. Even between each of my toes. I scrubbed until the water turned cold.

Before I can say anything, he lifts my nightshirt and tugs my panties down.

I freeze. Daddy has never checked down there.

“Are you a good girl? Or are you dirty?” His voice sounds different. He leans closer. His big belly touches me.

“G-good girl.” I try not to cry.

“Good girls let their daddies check if they are clean. Are you going to be good and let me check?”

His fingers trace a little lower.

I flinch before I can stop myself.

“You don't want to be a bad girl, do you?”

I shake my head.

“You know what happens to bad girls?”

I nod, my behind still sore from when I spilt my cereal this morning.

His hand continues, going farther down my body.

* * *

I blink, a silent scream on my lips. Sweat coats every inch of my body, plastering my thick black hair to my face. I swipe it away in frantic waves with my trembling hands. My bloodshot eyes dart around the room.

Solid white greets me from all directions.

Falling back against my pillow, I pull in a long breath.

It was a dream.
