“I'm sorry, officer,” Hanale's gentle voice greets after less than two steps, “but without a warrant, you're not getting up to that floor.”

“I could have you arrested for impeding –”

The doorman raises his hand from behind his desk, halting a young officer, “Not without a warrant.”

“There a problem?” Damien asks, his voice calm.

The officer turns toward our small party, his long, light-brown hair and shiny aviator sunglasses at odds with his crisp, new uniform. “Ah, Mr. Aolani?”

Damien nods, slowing his steps.

“I have a few questions for you.”

Damien's eyes narrow as he surveys the green cop from head to toe. “Sorry, I haven't seen any stolen surfboards. Perhaps, you should try questioning someone down at the beach.”

“Heh, funny.” He pulls out a notebook and strolls up to us. “No, I was actually wondering about some missing persons.”

“Afraid I haven’t seen any of those either.” Damien brushes past him, still leading us toward the front doors.

“Ka Hoahanau.” We all stop mid step as he smiles and pulls his sunglasses off. I glance at his name badge, Officer Riviera, my breath catching. “Fifteen missing men, all part of Ka Hoahanau.”

“And?” Damien's eyebrows rise slightly.

“The gang that killed your mother . . .”

“If you believe those men killed my mother, why aren’t they locked up in Halawa?”

The officer opens up his mouth as he fingers with his notebook, but remains wordless.

Damien glances down at his watch, the ring of diamonds on it glimmering from the enormous chandelier hanging in the center of the elaborate lobby. “If that's all, I'm now late for a meeting.” Without another word, Damien turns and heads toward the door.

Curling my hands into fists, I look straight ahead and follow after him.

“Where were you Monday morning? At eleven?” the cop calls after us.

Damien stops and pivots around. “Down at the docks, buying a catamaran.”

The uniformed cop nods his head before jotting something on his tablet. “A boat? Convenient for disposing bodies.”

“Or giving private tours. But,” Damien smirks, “what you would do with a yacht is your decision. You’re the one with the badge.”

Riviera scrunches his lips to the side before nodding toward Kane. “What about him? Where was your hired muscle?”

Damien’s smile turns into a grin as he reaches for me, tucking his arm around my waist. “Escorting my girlfriend to the spa. If you have any other questions, you can contact my lawyer, Kai Williams. Otherwise, please don’t step back in my building without a warrant.”

“Does this lawyer have a number?”

“It's a small island. You found me. I trust you can find him.” Without waiting for a reply, he leads me out the door and into a waiting black SUV.

Chapter Three

Closing my eyes, I ball my clammy hands into fists at my side, so I won't move them. I don't want to be a bad girl. I don't. But Mamãe never checks like this.

“What about here? Did you clean here?”

Before I can respond, he pushes a fat finger through my girl folds and inside me.

I cry out, trying to jerk away from him. He grabs my butt with his other hand, holding me in place.
