“Be safe,” he mouthed.

I nodded quickly and got in the cart to be whisked back to New Orleans and away from Raphael.

Chapter Two

ANISE

PRESENT DAY

“What are you going to do now?” Raphael asked. I watched his eyebrows furrow.

“I don’t know.” I sighed and stretched out on my bed with the laptop in front of me.

“Did they give you a severance package?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Raphael! That’s personal!”

“Since when are things too personal for us to discuss?”

“That’s the problem. You don’t know boundaries.”

“I know them.” Raphael was getting ready for a date and had his phone propped up on something. He disappeared into his overly large closet and then reappeared with two shirts. One was navy blue and the other was maroon. He held them up for me to see.

“Hold them closer to your skin.”

He complied, and I studied him. Both colors looked good, but the maroon made me want to…

“Navy,” I said.

“Ok.” Just like always, he put on the maroon.

I hissed as he took off the shirt that he was wearing, giving me a good glimpse of his upper body before he put on the maroon shirt. Damn it!

“How do I look?”

“Asshole!”

“Tell me I’m not sexy.” He waited.

“Are you going to put on those goofy glasses?”

“They make me look smart.”

“You are smart. You don’t need goofy glasses to make you look it.”

“Fine. No glasses.”

Raphael pulled on a suit jacket and the temperature rose in my apartment to an unbearable level.

“I’ll be back. I need some water.”

I jumped up, grabbed an ice-cold bottle of water, noticed the chocolate-covered fruit, and brought that as well before jumping into bed again.

“About time.”
