Stella opened the door to see Charlie standing there, his dog sitting at his side.

‘Hello.’ He smiled at Stella. ‘How’s it going?’

She motioned to the room where the noise was coming from. ‘Carnage, actually. Have you got time to come in for a quick drink? We’re about to give them some cake. I’m sure Ollie might like some?’

Ollie looked at his father hopefully. ‘Please?’

Charlie looked at Stella. ‘Well, if you’re sure I’m not imposing. I was just walking the dog. I’m happy to wait out here if easier.’

‘Don’t be so ridiculous, come on in.’ Stella beckoned him in.

Percy came to the door to say hello to his new canine companion, tail wagging.

‘What are we doing tonight, Dad?’ asked Ollie.

Charlie scratched his head. ‘No plans, Ol. It’s just us tonight.’

‘Can we go to the cinema? Max can come too?’

Max looked at Stella, his eyes lighting up. ‘Please?’

‘He’s very welcome to. I mean, it would just be the three of us…’ Charlie looked at Stella. ‘Unless, of course, you might like to join us?’

Stella laughed. ‘You’re very kind, but I think I’m going to be clearing up here for a while.’ Laughter came from the kitchen. ‘And I’ve got a few friends that might be hanging around.’ She looked at Charlie. ‘But I’d love to another time. Now, come and have a piece of cake and some Prosecco from a paper cup.’

‘Well, I can’t refuse an offer like that,’ he said, following her into the kitchen. He really hadn’t planned to stay, but then again when did life ever go to plan?
