Chapter 43

Remy

Remy woke to an empty bed. Giggles came through from the baby monitor. She sat, adjusting the silk scarf on her head as she grabbed her bathrobe from the floor. A quick trip to the bathroom to relieve herself and then brush her teeth was in order.

As she did, she got lost in her thoughts. Mikel had seemed off last night. Maybe he was just worried about his brother. Bently had always seemed like an infallible giant. But the last several times she’d seen him, he’d appeared so weak and exhausted. His thick black hair had been shaved. She hadn’t asked, but assumed it was because he had begun to lose it.

The deep rumble of a voice she recognized cut through her thoughts. She quickly finished up and walked down the hall to Lyra’s room. Opening the door quietly, her daughter pranced around Mikel. Fairy wings adorned Lyra’s back and her chubby little hand held tightly to a wand.

“Princess Daddy, your wishes will now come true!” Lyra said, dramatically waving the glittering wand.

Mikel was on his knees with his eyes closed and a pink sparkly crown on his head with several beaded necklaces around his neck. He opened his eyes, lovingly playing along with their daughter. “Awesome! I always wanted my wishes to come true. Thank you, magical fairy.”

Remy covered her mouth, trying to suppress her giggle. Seeing the big, tough tattooed man at the mercy of a glitter-loving five-year-old was quite the sight.

His eyes snapped to hers as he smiled. “Oh, looks like we have a visitor to our kingdom.”

Lyra turned and jumped up and down excitedly. “Yay! Mommy’s awake. Now can we have breakfast?” She dropped her wand on the bed.

“I think breakfast is a great idea,” he said, pulling off the layers of jewels.

“What do you want? Eggs? Muffins? Waffles?” Remy asked.

“Daddy said he was going to cook.” Lyra skipped out of the room.

Remy turned her attention back to Mikel as his arms wrapped around her. “I bought some groceries and I’m gonna make a feast. Part one of our celebration.” He kissed her neck, trailing his mouth closer to hers.

“Oh, I like the sound of that. What’s part two?” She laughed.

“You and me, going out to The Shipwreck to dance the night away. Your mother already said she’d be more than happy to have a sleepover with Lyra.”

“You talked to my mother?” she asked.

He kissed her lips, once, twice, and then a third time. “That’s okay, right?”

She’d thought he was pulling away last night. Sure, he’d been the one to bring up moving in together, but then he’d started acting distant. Maybe going home to check on his brother was all he’d needed.

“It’s perfect. How was Bently?” she asked.

He sighed and her gut clenched in worry. “He was sick from the treatments, but he got good news. He’s in remission.” Mikel smiled with his whole face.

Joy filled her—a happiness overload. “He’s all clear?”

“Yup.”

“Oh, that’s great news! Once he’s feeling a little better, I’ll make him a cake and we can have a party,” she offered.

“I’m sure he’d love that. Now, go get dressed because I have another surprise for both of you.” He slapped her ass playfully.

“You sure are full of them today.” She laughed.

“I don’t hear any complaints.”

An hour later, she relaxed into the leather chair with Lyra seated in between her and Mikel.

“That tickles!” Lyra said, giggling as the woman scrubbed her little feet in the pedicure lounge.
