Panting and breathless, he smiled at her. “I love you, Remy.”

“I love you too.”

He pulled out of her, slowly. She missed the connection immediately.

Mikel kissed her gently before lying next to her and pulling her against him. She basked in his warmth, her head against the steady thumping of his heartbeat. Reveling in the liquid glow of postcoital bliss, she was filled with gratitude.

What they’d just shared had been indescribable. She was so emotionally stripped bare, tears welled in her eyes. They had evolved throughout the years.

“We better get you cleaned up,” he said, sliding out of bed. She lay in her bliss, satiated and boneless, drunk on orgasms.

A few minutes later, Mikel returned, still naked. He slipped one arm under her head, and the other, her knees. After carrying her to the bathroom, he gently eased her into the hot bath he’d prepared.

Candles had been lit around the corners of the room, the shadows dancing on the white tile. Mikel slipped in behind her as they relaxed together. He pulled a silk scarf around her head, securing her hair out of the way. Using a washcloth, he rubbed over her arms and neck, kissing the spot behind her ear. Her heart melted. How did she get so lucky? How was this man hers?

The warm cloth trailed down her breasts and arms before he swirled it across her belly. She sighed as he tenderly cleaned every inch of her body. Tears welled again in her eyes. She loved Mikel, and she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him and share an eternity of moments like this with him.

“Marry me,” she said, turning around to face him. Her slick body slid against his. They were chest to chest as she searched his eyes.

Mikel gazed back, as if he too was enchanted by her. “You’re asking me?”

“I’m telling you.”

“So bossy.” He smirked.

“Well?” she asked.

“Come on. I want to show you something,” he said, nodding towards the door. She got up, butterflies dancing in her belly as nerves got the better of her. Was this too much for him? Too soon?

He wrapped a towel around her, and then one around his waist before taking her hand. After leading her back to the bedroom, he bent over the duffle bag he had brought earlier, digging around in one of the pockets. She sat on the bed, her legs too weak to stand any longer.

Mikel turned towards her, a smile on his face as he remained kneeling.

“Remy, I’ve known you were the only woman I could ever love for a long time. I made so many mistakes, but taking a chance on you was never one of them. You taught me that I could be more than I thought possible. You believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. You gave me the best gift in this world: a daughter.”

Remy brushed the tear away that fell down her cheek. Her heart was so full of joy.

Mikel took her left hand, slipping something cold on her ring finger.

“Like most things, you had the courage to do them before me. Marry me, Remy, and let me fill your days with happiness. Let me love you like a husband should. Give me all your tomorrows and I’ll make them more special than the last.”

“Yes.” Remy nodded as she held out her arms for Mikel. He buried his face in her neck.

“I love you so much,” she said.

“I love you too. Do you like the ring?” he asked, turning on the bedside lamp.

She gasped. An eight-pointed star of grey diamond glittered back at her, surrounded by inlays of smaller clear stones. The center looked as if it held an entire galaxy. “It’s breathtaking.”

“I used some of the money that Dre set aside from the business for it. But with what’s left, I was thinking we could look at some land and I’d design you your dream house,” Mikel said, sitting next to her on the bed.

“It’s just so much. I wasn’t expecting all of this,” Remy said, leaning in to kiss him.

“Sometimes the best things in the world are unexpected,” he said.

They lay down, dropping their towels to the floor before they drifted off to sleep, skin against skin, in each other’s arms.
