Remy awoke to a predawn sky filtering through the blinds. She checked the clock: five a.m. She glanced at her left hand, the ring shining back at her, reliving one of the best nights of her life.

Mikel’s snores signaled he was still deep asleep. She’d surprise him with cinnamon rolls for breakfast and maybe they could slip back into the sheets and play with the extra icing. First, coffee.

She climbed out of bed before grabbing her bathrobe and tying it around her. Their clothes from last night were still scattered across the floor—small reminders of their time together. Remy smiled before she picked up her dress and panties and grabbed his clothes as well. She would get to do laundry with him for the rest of her life now. As silly as the thought was, it brought a whole list of activities to mind that she would forever share with her fiancé/soon-to-be husband. Butterflies flipped as she hummed on her way to the laundry area in the bathroom.

After dropping all the other items into the washer, she reached into his pants to retrieve his wallet. Remy double-checked all his pockets, her hand freezing when she made contact with something. She held her breath and closed her eyes as her stomach knotted. Gone were the joyous flutters, replaced with nerves.

No.

Remy braced herself as she pulled it out. A plastic bag with two pills. Her heart sank as her eyes burned with tears. A piece of paper was folded inside. She pulled it out and unfolded it with trembling hands and read the feminine script.

Room 305. Friday at three. Bring the cash.

Her ears rang as she stumbled backwards, her stomach churning. She ran to the bathroom and vomited into the toilet. Wiping her mouth as tears poured from her eyes, she quieted a sob. How could she have been so blind … again? How could he do this to her?

Remy’s whole body shook as her world fell apart. How could he seem so honest and then throw everything away like it was nothing? Like she was nothing?

I am done. She couldn’t go through it all again. Her heart shredded into a million shards of glass, piercing and slicing her insides into ribbons of regret. The pain was unbearable, every breath a struggle coated in agony.

Her stomach flipped again before expelling every fuck she had left to give for the man who’d taken everything she had and thrown it back in her face.
