Mikel made his way back to the kitchen, his ribs feeling cracked and broken as he tried to take shallow breaths through the ache in his chest.
Remy hadn’t moved.
“I’m gonna go like you asked. Baby, I want you to know everything I have done and kept from you was to keep you safe.”
She shook her head and turned from him, her sob breaking through his remaining walls. Tears pricked his eyes, slipping down his cheeks as he ran out to his truck. The dark grey clouds that hovered above cracked open in a downpour. He was soaked in the few seconds it took for him to manage to climb in the cab.
He slammed his fist against the dashboard. Searing pain shot through his split knuckles. He welcomed the sting. Was he being too prideful, not telling her everything?
No. She would only worry, and perhaps still kick him out knowing that their daughter was in danger because of his past mistakes. If he fixed the problem before he returned and then explained everything, then maybe he would have a fighting chance.
Mikel started the engine, peeling away as he called the only person he knew could help him.
“Joe’s back and he’s been threatening my family. I need you to help me catch this son of a bitch once and for all.”
