“You fucking bitch!” he yelled.

She pushed up on her arms and wiggled free, backing into to the other side of the counter. The glint of metal caught her eye under the cabinet, just inches away on the floor. “I’ve already called the police. They’re on the way!” Remy screamed.

Joe jumped on her, pinning her to the ground with his hands around her neck. “Let them come. All that matters is I collect payment for what your boyfriend owes me.” He sneered.

“Wh-what do you mean?”

“He stole years away from my family. Now I’m going to take everyone he loves from him.”

She winced from his pungent hot breath. “You’re wrong. He doesn’t love me.” She struggled.

“He’s across town waiting in an empty motel room thinking he’s gonna be a hero. It’s too late for cash. I want blood.” His hands tightened around her neck.

“No, he’s meeting a woman.” She defended Mikel—anything to distract him. The longer he talked, the more of a chance she had that the police would show up in time.

He laughed gleefully, shaking. “Nah, darlin’. June is just my errand girl.”

The note was from Joe? I was wrong about everything.

She struggled under his weight, clawing her fingernails into his arms, scratching at his face. Her attempts only seemed to incite him more. Her throat burned, as he squeezed tighter. She fought to take a breath. Tears pricked her eyes. Where are the police?

The room grew darker. It was too late for her—she could accept that as long as her daughter was saved. She stopped fighting. Her hand hit the cold tile, spreading out, searching for her last remaining hope.

Help me.

She touched the cold metal of the knife as her ears rang.

She gripped the handle tightly and swung with all her might. He released his hold on her neck and caught her forearm. She choked on fresh oxygen, her throat burning as if she’d swallowed one thousand tiny shards of glass. He removed the knife from her hand and switched it back and forth in his grasp.

“Well, this just got interesting.” He laughed manically. His right arm came up, the knife glinting in the afternoon light. His arm dropped fast as he stabbed her thigh. Pain sliced through her as she gasped, arching off the floor. Black spots covered her vision and Remy screamed. He pinned her back down, eyes trained on her as she tried to gulp in air, fighting to stay awake. The pain was too much.

“When I’m done with you, I’ll make sure to take everything else from that bastard, including his daughter,” Joe said.

Adrenaline coursed through her as flashes of her little girl’s face came to her mind. No one would get there in time. She was the only thing between this monster and Lyra.

Joe’s hands wove around her throat again as his devious smile grew. She had lost all hope that anyone would come as darkness began to overtake her. She forced her eyes open, gripping the handle of the knife. Pain sliced through her thigh as she removed the sharp metal from her thigh. With an angry protective roar, she thrust it into his ribs. The evil smile on her attacker’s face turned into a grimace as she stabbed him with the weapon over and over. Bile rose in her throat at the sound of flesh and bones breaking beneath the force of her hand.

Warm liquid pooled around her as he staggered off her.

Bang!

Joe’s body crumpled to the floor as two hazy figures appeared in her line of vision. Blinking red and blue lights flashed on the walls.

“Remy! Oh my god. I’m so sorry, baby.” Mikel’s voice pierced through the growing haze as she shivered.

It is so cold down here.

“I love you, Remy. I was trying to stop him before … Oh, god.” He cried out like a wounded animal.

Relief encompassed her. Her baby was safe.

“Lyra. Dryer,” she croaked through the pain.

Take care of my baby.It was her last wish on her fallen star—the only light as the darkness consumed her.
