“Well, it will make sure I don’t end up the fool again. Besides, I’m not avoiding every female. Your sister is a woman, my mother—”

Mikel shook his head. “You know what I mean, dickhead.”

Andre blew out a puff of air. “You do you, bro. I’ll do me.”

“Literally.”

“You asshole. Couldn’t stop yourself, huh?” Andre laughed. “Thanks for the support, friend,” Andre said, enunciating the last word.

“Anytime.”

Dre ended the call and Mikel went back to putting dinner away.

The picture of Remy on the fridge caught his eye. He inhaled long and deep as memories of the attack came flooding over him. There’d been so much blood. His Dove, covered in red. She’d fought with her last breath to keep their daughter safe. He’d never forget the terror that had seized him when June Sampson had come to that hotel room to tell him that Joe wasn’t planning on showing but he knew where Remy had lived. Mikel had raced as fast as he could to her. But he’d been too late.

Car lights lit up the driveway as their SUV pulled in. He dried his hands and went to open the door.

Soft brown eyes, shining with adoration, met his. Love and happiness erupted in his chest, overflowing and drowning him in gratitude. The love of his life walked through the door and wrapped her arms around him. He kissed his wife as she relaxed in his arms, a small baby bump growing between them.

“I missed you,” she said.

“I missed you too.” He kissed her forehead.

“Is Lyra already asleep?” Remy pulled off her coat and hung it by the door.

“Yeah, but she wouldn’t go down without me showing her your star.”

She nodded. “Ahh, best wedding present ever. She’s your daughter, that’s for sure.”

He chuckled. “How was work?”

“Great. Jasmine’s going to have one hell of an opening feast for her bed-and-breakfast. Poor woman looks like she could use a nap. I told her to come over this weekend and I can watch Zoey for her while she gets some rest.”

“It will be good practice for when our son is born.” He placed his palm gently on her belly.

“Sure will.”

He frowned as more memories came back to him.

“Hey.” Remy’s hands reached to hold his face. “Where’d you go?”

“I was just thinking about you in the hospital.”

She kissed his lips, once, twice. “We’re all safe. Lyra’s doing great with counseling; she didn’t see or hear anything. The baby is growing strong.” She shuddered. “And he’s dead, out of our life forever thanks to Bently.”

Mikel swallowed. His brother had been by his side, arriving seconds before the paramedics as they rushed to Remy’s aid.

“Thanks to you, my babies are safe,” he said.

“I’m sorry for doubting you,” she apologized again.

“You had every right. And I should have told you everything from the beginning. There are no words for how happy I am to have you in my life.” He pulled her close in a hug.

“Well, you can show me. My feet are killing me and I could use a bath.” She smiled.

“What my Dove wants, she gets,” he said, picking her up and carrying her towards the stairs to their private bath in their new home. He’d remodeled it himself, making sure to add an extra-large tub with jets.

Soon the room was filled with steam, water droplets clinging to their bare flesh as he massaged every last bit of lingering tension from her body. Candles flickered as their shadows danced. Their bodies slipped and slid in their own hypnotic rhythm as they connected as man and wife. Her heavy breathing and quiet cries for more were a private rhapsody as he thrust inside her. She quaked and trembled as water splashed onto the floor. He kissed the pool of liquid that collected in the hollow of her collarbone.
