“Yes it does,” he agreed.

While they waited for it to cool, Mikel adjusted in his seat, clenching and unclenching his fists. “Tell me more about what’s going on with you,” he said before plating himself a piece of the hot meal.

“Like what? I feel like you know almost everything about me.”

“Tell me something I don’t, then.” He smirked before taking a bite.

She waited for hers to cool as she began talking about her plans for the next few years. Would he be willing to do a long-distance relationship when she went to culinary school in New York? Was it too early to ask? She ate her pizza.

“You’ll be great at that, Remy. Your whole face lights up when you talk about your dreams. I know you’ll get there someday.” He sipped on his drink as she reached for her tea.

“Well, that’s just phase one of my dream.” She smiled.

He chuckled. “Don’t leave me hangin’.”

She pictured it in her mind as she told him. “I want to have the bakery all set, and eventually, I’ll do catering for special events like tea parties and weddings. Then I want to have a couple kids. It would be so fun to grow up in a bakery. Don’t you think?”

Mikel blinked a few times, eyes wide before his expression hardened, becoming unreadable once again. “Yeah.”

Had something she said upset him? The tapping of his foot grew louder as the table began to tremble slightly.

Maybe it was best to change the topic. “Emma is going on her first tour with her band. I don’t know what I’m gonna do without her. At least I’ll still have Jasmine.”

Mikel nodded. It was obvious something was bothering him, but if he needed her to fill the silence, she would.

“We had someone call in and ask for a … umm … special cake for a bachelorette party. I did the design and sent it off without Dolly checking the work. I had spent a lot of time on the details and it was so realistic, so I was surprised when the woman came back in to complain about it.”

A triangle formed between Mikel’s eyebrows. “What was the cake decorated with?”

“Several small roosters.” Heat rose to her cheeks as he studied her for a moment before busting out in laughter.

“She asked for a cake covered in cocks, didn’t she?”

“Apparently, she wasn’t a bird-lover.” Remy sighed.

“What did Dolly say?” he asked in between bouts of amusement.

Remy couldn’t help but chuckle herself too. “She explained the euphemism and I was mortified that my seventy-year-old boss was talking to me about …” She leaned in and whispered, “Penises.”

Mikel shook his head.

“Then she told me to check with her or Emma before I started designing anything in the future.”

“I bet Emma lost it,” he said, taking a sip of his drink.

Remy rolled her eyes. “You have no idea. She said she’d failed me as a best friend, and then continued naming other slang or sayings for every body part and term for sex.”

“So, it’s safe to say you won’t be making any more roosters for cock parties in the future, huh?” he teased her with a smirk.

“My parents are professors. I was busy visiting natural history and science museums when other people were at the theater watching movies or playing in the park.”

“How did Dre get out of all that?”

She crossed her arms and huffed. “Dre came sometimes, but he didn’t have as much interest in it. He preferred to be more active. I actually liked going.”

Mikel nodded as he ate another piece of pizza.

Towards the end of the night, he was fidgeting more and more. She hadn’t ever seen him so antsy.
