Chapter 9

Mikel

Remy bounded down the steps from her house towards his truck and he couldn’t help the way his body reacted. She was like sunshine. Whenever he was around her, he felt lighter. That smile on those shiny lips made his knees weak and his cock hard.

He’d had every intention of knocking on her door, but she’d run out as he slipped into park. Seemed like she was just as happy to see him as he was to see her. How could that be possible?

He got out and jogged around the other side of the truck. He wrapped his arms around her tight little body, sexy as fuck in another one of those summer dresses she wore all the time. Good god. He needed to think of something else to get his arousal under control. Anything to stop fantasizing of how good those thighs would feel wrapped over his shoulders.

Slow down.

He inhaled and kissed her neck, her sweet scent intoxicating.

“I missed you,” she said as he released her.

“We texted all week.”

“Yeah, but I missed having you in person.” She looked up at him expectantly.

“Me too.” He leaned down and kissed her lips, tasting her cherry lip gloss.

“I might have missed that most of all,” she said, her voice breathier as he released her and opened the passenger door.

“Same here, baby.”

As they pulled onto his street, she asked, “Where are you taking me?”

“It’s a surprise.” Hopefully she would not be disappointed.

After parking in front of his house, he got out and helped her to the ground. Her confused expression made him smile. She didn’t say another word—she just followed him inside.

“Close your eyes.”

She studied him, seemingly unsure for a moment before she obliged. She trusted him. The thought brought him both relief and unease.

“No peeking,” he said as he placed his hands over her closed eyes and led her safely through the living room to the kitchen.

This was the moment of truth. Hopefully this isn’t a stupid idea.

“Okay, you can open them now.”

He stepped in front of her, preparing himself for the disappointment on her face. Good thing he had a backup plan. He turned his head from her to the array of baking flours and supplies on the counter, then back again.

Remy’s hands covered her mouth as she blinked away a tear.

Shit. He’d really messed up. “I have another option if this—”

“This is perfect!” Her hands fell, revealing the biggest smile he’d ever seen on her face. Relief flooded through his system as she looked at him like he’d hung the moon.

“I figured, why wait trying out some of those recipes you wanted to experiment with? Took me four stores before I found that cassava flour you were talking about, and I got a list of other ingredients from Emma that you’d need. I can be your taste tester.” He stuck his fingers in his pockets.

“No.” She shook her head as she studied the items he’d set out all over the kitchen.

“You don’t want to?”

Remy turned and wrapped her arms around him as she met his gaze. “Of course I want to. I just mean that you won’t just be sitting there taste testing, silly. You’re gonna be my assistant.” She beamed.

He was out of his element for sure, but he’d do anything to keep that smile on her face directed at him. “Your wish is my command. Just tell me where you want me.”
