Chapter 10

Remy

The next month went by fast. Mikel would pop into the bakery for coffee, and once Remy had finished her shift on Saturdays, she’d swing by his house.

“Haven’t you seen enough of each other?” Jasmine whined as she opened the door for Remy.

“No. You know we don’t get any time for us during the week because of his work,” Remy defended, stepping inside.

“Uck.”

“Is it starting to really bother you, Jaz?”

Jasmine sighed and crossed her arms. “No. I mean, as long as you don’t go into details about my brother’s and your activities. It’s just gross to know you think of him in that way.”

Heat spread to Remy’s cheeks. “Jaz, we aren’t—I mean, we haven’t …”

Jasmine put her hands up. “Nah, nah, nah! I don’t want to hear any details of what you are or aren’t doing.”

“Okay, alright. Is he upstairs?”

“Yup,” Jasmine said, leading the way. She turned into her room. The music began blaring just seconds after the door closed behind her.

Remy knocked at Mikel’s.

“Hold on a sec … alright, come in,” Mikel’s voice called.

She entered. He was lying on his bed, his laptop resting on his thighs.

“Hey, beautiful,” he said.

Relief. He’s in a good mood today. She exhaled. “Hey yourself.” She walked over before sitting next to him, searching for any sign that he was off. His eyes seemed fine, his pupils a little small, but it was bright in the room.

She hadn’t told anyone about finding the pills those five weeks ago, not even Mikel. She hoped the issue would resolve itself, and she would never have to broach the topic. Maybe he’d stopped and it was a one-time thing, like she’d thought. He hadn’t been by that house again—at least not with her. It seemed whatever she was doing was working.

The screen was paused on a video of some sort of architect’s plans.

“Working on your day off, huh?” She smiled and leaned her head against his shoulder.

“Ah, the life of the self-employed.” He chuckled.

“What are your plans for this weekend?”

He set the laptop aside and wrapped his arm around her, kissing her forehead. “I’m pretty beat. I was gonna relax. Maybe have a few beers with Dre and Bent around the fire, maybe grill out for dinner.”

“Oh, okay.” Was there an invite in there somewhere for me? It sounded like a relaxing idea, but they’d done it every weekend this month.“I guess I’ll get going, then, and leave you to it.” She started to get up, hoping he wouldn’t see the rejection on her face.

“What? Why are you going? You don’t wanna hang out with us?” He seemed genuinely confused.

“I wasn’t invited.” She smiled, trying to lighten the mood and make herself sound more like she was teasing him.

“I didn’t know I needed to. I just assumed you’d wanna spend the weekend with me again.” His gaze flashed with his own rejection as he drew his hands away from her.

“I would love to. But …”

“But?” he asked, not looking at her.

“A girl likes to be taken out every now and then. You know, like on a date?” She was thankful for her dark skin to hide the hot flush that burned her flesh.
