She’d been careful to avoid topics that might send him into that place where he shut off. He never got angry with her, just distant. His body was present, but not his mind. Had she pushed him too much by asking for what she wanted? Stupid! I should have kept my mouth shut and followed his lead. Her own insecurities had led her speech, needing him to acknowledge they were dating and that she was his girlfriend, without having to come right out and ask.

Mikel finally turned back to her. “A date, huh?”

She nodded shyly and rambled. “If you don’t want to, that’s perfectly fine.”

“Let’s do it.” He smiled.

Sweet relief. She was finally able to breathe normally again. “You sure?”

“Yeah. I got an idea.”

“Care to share?” She grinned, butterflies returning to their happy dance in her belly.

“It’s a surprise.”

“The last one worked out so well. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for us this time.” She beamed.

“We have some time to kill. Why don’t we go get some lunch and then maybe ice cream? I’ll drop you off at home to change and then I’ll pick you up at seven.” He stood.

“Sounds good to me.”

He raked a hand through his dark hair and sighed. “Can I ask you a favor?”

Remy got to her feet and walked around to face him. “Anything.” And she meant it. She’d give this man her own heart if his stopped beating.

“Jasmine’s been acting off lately. I want to get her out of the house, spend some time with her. Do you mind if she comes with us?” he asked sheepishly.

This was the Mikel she’d fallen for. The one who cared for his family and who’d raised a child when he was one himself. The Mikel who protected fiercely.

“Of course not! I’ll go get her.” She reached on tippy-toes and kissed his cheek.

His arms looped around her as he pulled her against him. Heat spread across her body, tangling and weaving together with something deeper. A force rose between them, sparking the air with electricity. The way his strong hands held her, and his brown eyes devoured her, charged her body with sensations only he had ever elicited.

“We better go before I have you naked and screaming my name. And we both know you’re not ready for that.” His voice was like gravel, coated with desire.

Aren’t I? What is my name again?

When he looked at her like that, everything left her mind except the intense need to connect with him in every way.

“Don’t look at me like that,” he said.

“L-like what?” She stared at his full lips as she licked her own.

“Like you’d let me do anything I wanted to you right now.” His voice was part groan.

She met his gaze. Would her first time be in his bedroom with his sister in the house?

“No,” he said, as if reading her thoughts. He took her hand and guided her briskly out the bedroom door. “Get Jaz and meet me at the truck in five.”

She nodded as he shut the door. Staring into the bathroom, she hesitated. Do I have time for a cold shower? Wasn’t that what people said worked to calm this … riot inside her? Maybe she didn’t need to cool down. Maybe she was ready.

At some point, she’d fallen in love with Mikel. He held her heart captive and he didn’t even know it. She was his, and the thought was euphoric. She trusted him with her most vulnerable parts. And she never wanted this feeling to end.

“Remy? Are you going to be gone tonight?” her mama, Tilda, asked, walking into her room.

“Yeah. I’ll probably be out late, so don’t wait up.”
