Her mother’s kind face flashed with concern. “Are you hanging out with Emma?”

“No. I’m going to be with Mikel. He’s taking me on a surprise date,” she answered honestly.

Tilda hesitated, before she said, “Honey, you know we love you. We love the Evans kids too. I’m just worried about you. I want you to make sure you’re being safe.”

Embarrassment radiated through Remy. She slapped her hand across her eyes in mortification. “Mama.”

“I’d rather you be safe than sorry. I know you’ve been on the pill, but I need to make sure you’re using other types of protection too.”

“Oh my God, Mom. We are not having sex.”

“Okay.” She sighed, relief painting her features. “But when you decide to do that with someone, you’ll use a prophylactic, right?”

“Yes, Mom. I’m not stupid.”

“It’s not about being stupid, Remy. Sometimes you can get caught up in the moment and you just … forget. Or sometimes the boy might pressure you to go without it.”

Remy held out her hand, knowing the only way to stop the assault on her ears. “Yes. You’ve told me, Mom. I know. I’m taking my pill every day. When I decide to have sex, I will definitely use a condom. Now, can we be done talking about this?”

“Okay, fine. Just one more thing.”

“Mooooom!” She groaned.

“There’s a new box of condoms in the bathroom, just in case.” She walked in and kissed Remy’s forehead. “Have a fun time. Be safe. Please text me where you’ll be just in case.”

“I will.”

“Love you, honey.”

“Love you too, Mom.”

Maybe she’d grab one to keep in her purse. Just in case.
