“With your business sense and Andre’s skills you’ll get there in no time.”

“I got skills too,” he teased.

She smirked, lust in her eyes. “You sure do.”

Was she making a sexual reference? Wow. Remy sure was coming out of her shell. He liked this newfound confidence in her.

They got off the ride and meandered around to a few games before stopping at one of the food trucks.

“One candy apple, please,” Mikel ordered, fishing for cash in his wallet.

The bored teenager handed the candied fruit over and Remy greedily took it as he paid the lady. They walked around, hand in hand. It felt so good to be close to her, to be in Remy’s space.

Her little pink tongue darted out, licking around the candy apple. He was hard as steel, as she enjoyed the sweet treat, taking little bites here and there.

“Want a taste?” she asked, offering the confection to him.

Unable to restrain himself any longer, he leaned in and swept his tongue across her mouth—a sugar rush of Remy and candied apple ensued. She parted her lips, allowing him access as he deepened the kiss. She let out the smallest of moans. He slid his hand to her neck and under her long braids. She was hot to the touch. He wasn’t in this firestorm alone.

He pulled back before he took her right there. It was commanding every last shred of control to not move too quickly with Remy. She was different, and he didn’t want to do anything she’d regret. This all had to be her choice. He’d follow her lead. “Let’s go listen to the band.”

She nodded before he led her around the grounds towards the stage. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He’d ignore it, just this once. Mikel didn’t want his world to taint hers.

“What’s wrong?” Remy asked as she stopped walking.

She must have sensed him grow tense. The phone vibrated again. Slipping it out of his pocket, he held his breath. Joe was calling.

“Can you give me a second? I gotta take this.”

“Sure.”

He turned and walked out of earshot. “Yeah,” he answered.

“I got a delivery for you.” Joe coughed.

“I’ll do it first thing tomorrow.”

“No. Tonight.”

Mikel tugged on the ends of his hair and bit his lip. “I’m busy tonight.” He’d never told Joe no before. There were consequences, but if anyone was worth it, it was Remy.

“Excuse me? Maybe your brother wants to hear about that little secret you’ve kept all these years. Think Mister Rent-A-Cop would be willing to look the other way for his little brother?”

Mikel swallowed the curses he wanted to yell at the man who held his life hostage. No.Bently would kill me. His brother’s moral compass would tear them apart. “Text me the details and I’ll be over soon.”

“That’s a good boy.” Joe’s words cut deeper than any two-edged sword ever could.

Mikel hung up and balled his fists. Anger radiated through him in rippling waves. He had no one to blame except himself. He’d done this. Spotting a portable bathroom, he ran in, barely locking it behind him. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the little bottle of white powder. He hesitated.

I shouldn’t do this. Not now. Not with Remy just out there, waiting for him. I am stronger than this, damn it! But how the hell was he going to face her and see that pretty face fall with disappointment when he told her he’d have to cut their date short? Again? It would destroy him. The powder spilled onto his hand before he knew it. Just one small hit. One little bump to get me through. His eyes closed, as he welcomed the rush.

He took another minute to compose himself and then put it away before going on a search for Remy.

She wasn’t by the booth where he’d left her. Scanning the crowd, he caught sight of her boxed in against the side of a tent by two guys. One of the motherfuckers draped his arm around her.

Pure blind rage seared his body, taking controlas he stalked towards them.

“You should come with us. I promise to show you a good time.”
