He turned his gaze to her, every muscle in his expression angry and rigid. “Are you gonna try and tell me who I can hang out with now too? Clingy and controlling,” he scoffed before fleeing the truck, slamming the door, and stalking over to the house.

Surrounded by empty silence, she tried to take slow, even breaths. It was clear he needed help. He was only lashing out at her because of the drugs—picking a fight to push her away. This wasn’t the real Mikel.

She had known this wasn’t going to be easy. Now, they had more than just their lives to think about. Maybe after he found out about the pregnancy, it would give him the final push of courage to seek help.

She drew in a hopeful breath and swallowed the tears that threatened to spill. Courage welled in her chest, her stomach an anxious ball of nerves. She had a little more left of herself she could give.

Remy’s hand trembled as she reached for the door latch.

She could do this for her baby.

She could do this for Mikel.

She would do this for herself.
