Chapter 25

Mikel

Mikel’s mind registered what she said as bile rose in his throat.

“The baby. The baby.” Remy shivered and rocked, holding her arms against herself. He reached out, afraid to touch her, but needing to with every cell in his body.

“What are you talking about?” he asked, praying this was all just a part of a really bad trip.

“I tried to tell you.” Tears streaked down her face as her eyes grew vacant.

What had he done?

Bently came rushing over. “Are you okay, Remy? The ambulance is on its way. Where are you hurt?”

“The baby. The baby,” she kept repeating. She had never looked this forlorn before. She seemed … broken. He’d done this.

You ruin everything.

You destroy everything you touch.

Killer.

Murderer.

Remy was loaded into an ambulance as he watched helplessly, having to stay with his brother. Bently fielded questions from the other officers, promising to bring him down to the station to answer them after they had gone to check on Remy. Joe and the same guy who had held him down while he was beaten were led to the back of a patrol car.

Mikel climbed into Bently’s truck and his brother drove him towards the hospital.

“Did you know she was pregnant?” Bently asked.

“No.”

“How long have you been using?”

“Since high school.” It didn’t matter now. His secret was out.

Bently was silent for a moment before asking, “After all we saw growing up, you turned to the same thing. Why?”

Because it’s the only escape. The only way to feel something besides pain and emptiness.“Sometimes it’s the only way to get through the day.”

Bently slammed his fist against the dashboard. “How the fuck could I not see? My own brother!”

Mikel focused outside the window, daring to hope that Remy would be okay, that he hadn’t ruined her life too.

He was a murderer with blood on his hands. How could he not expect that to taint anything else good in his life? Because of his decisions, he had hurt one of the people he loved most in this world in the worst way.

He balled his hands into fists, knuckles split and bleeding from fighting Joe. He would have killed him if Bently hadn’t pulled him off the scum. Remy had almost died because of him. I didn’t protect her.

Mikel sat in the waiting room, his leg bouncing up and down anxiously as he bit his nails until they bled. Remy’s parents rushed in before being quickly escorted away with a nurse.

Andre arrived just minutes behind them. “What happened?” he demanded, eyeing the bruises and blood on his face.

“It’s all my fault,” Mikel admitted.

“What?” Andre blinked in disbelief.
