Bently sighed. “Thanks for this.”

“Anytime.” Mikel flicked the television on. “Wanna watch a game?”

Bently would never admit it, but he was too full of pride to ask for what he needed, or appear weak. Bently had taken care of Mikel and Jasmine when they were too young to do it themselves. Now it was Mikel’s turn to repay the kindness.

Mikel wouldn’t burden his brother with his problems anymore.

The door burst open. Mikel turned in time to see Jasmine run inside to the bathroom. He stood and went to check on her before Bently could try to get up.

Retching came from behind the wooden door.

“You okay?” Mikel knocked.

The toilet flushed and then the water in the sink squeaked on. Jasmine opened the door, looking green. “Guess you missed this part of Remy’s pregnancy. It’s all par for the course. At least, that’s what she tells me. This little bean doesn’t want me to keep anything down.”

Her insult hit its intended target. If only he could figure out how to fix his relationship with his sister. “I made some soup. There’s some on the stove if you want it.”

She glanced towards the kitchen and then to Bently, who held up his bowl and smiled at her.

“I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try,” she mumbled, heading into the kitchen.

Mikel followed her. “Weren’t you working with Remy today at the bakery?”

She poured the remaining contents of the soup in a bowl as she nodded. “Yeah, she sent me home because I wasn’t feeling so good. All the different smells were just too much. It’s not even the bakery stuff; it’s the customers’ perfumes.”

“Oh.”

“I felt bad because she’s totally slammed and shorthanded.” Jasmine carried her bowl into the living room and sat next to Bently.

He picked up his phone and messaged Remy.

Mikel: Hey, baby. Just wanted to let you know I’m thinking about you. Miss you.

It was time he took care of his family.
