An hour later, they joined the other couples back on the ground. His muscles ached in places he hadn’t known existed, and the hint of rope burn stung his hands.

“It was so scary,” Mia said, taking a sip from her water bottle.

Andre laughed. “You stayed on the first level.”

She glared at him. “I did not. This is the first level.” She pointed towards the area where a few young children took turns.

“That’s not even a level. That’s the kiddie area.” Andre chuckled.

Mia crossed her arms over her chest and everyone in their group laughed.

“I’m gonna find a bathroom,” Atlas said, turning to walk towards the porta-potties lined up along the gravel walkway towards the forest.

After he’d relieved himself and used the hand sanitizer, he walked back into the warm sunshine. He hadn’t smiled this much, this often, since . . . when? When had he ever been this carefree?

He neared the edge of the group, walking behind Jasmine. The atmosphere had shifted. The others looked down as if they’d rather be anywhere else but there. The only two looking at her were Mikel and Bently, sorrow, anger, and confusion reflecting back.

“She knew! She knew what he did to me and left me there. Don’t try to pretend a few good moments make up for that.”

Her brothers’ faces drained of color before turning red.

What the hell have I walked into? Should I go before she sees me? But more importantly, who was the fucker who’d laid a hand on her?
