“You . . . did you do something, Finn?” Fear and uncertainty saturated the air between them.

Finn shook his head. “I remember telling him to fuck off, basically.”

Her shoulders relaxed some.

“He said something about messing with mi familia and then mentioned Carelli.”

“Fuck,” Mason said, drawing both of their gazes.

“What?” Finn asked.

Mason pursed his lips together and shook his head. “I worked security for a club in the city one time—and it was my last . . . The Carelli family is mafia, and they are trying to extend from Boston up the east coast.”

“The mafia? As in the actual mob?” Finn gasped.

“What does that have to do with you and me?” Charli asked, fear tinging her shaky voice.

“They wanted me to do something, and I turned them down. I think your attack was a warning for me to comply.”

“But that was more than a year ago. Why wait so long to come back?” Charli asked.

“I don’t know.”

“I’m gonna go wait outside for Bently. He should be here any minute.” Mason excused himself.

Finn turned to Charli. “It’s all my fault.”

Charli’s expression morphed from confusion to anger.

He deserved all her rage. She’d almost died because of him. And now she was in danger. His child was in harm’s way. And god—his parents could be too.

“Why would you think that?”

Her question stunned him. “I should have told you and gotten help from the beginning. Maybe if I’d—”

Her hand rested over his heart. “Stop it right now. Don’t you go there. Yes, you should have told me and probably Bently too. But you didn’t give in to them. That would be even more dangerous. Once you get caught up in that stuff, it’s impossible to get out . . . At least, that’s what I know from movies.” She offered him a small smile.

Was she delusional? She wasn’t blaming him?

She must have read his mind, because a look of recognition flashed on her lovely face. “Finn, you thought this would change everything, didn’t you? You figured I would blame you?”

He nodded.

“And you still told me.” It was more a statement than a question.

“I promised you. And you deserve to know the truth.”

She crashed into his arms, hugging him tight. “I love you, Finn. I love you so much.”

Stunned, he managed to squeeze her back and lay a kiss on the top of her head. “I love you too.” He closed his eyes, relishing her closeness. “I wish I could remember more. Maybe I said something to Bently about it when it happened.”

“You didn’t.” Bently interrupted them.

Finn looked up.

“Mason filled me in.” Bently’s sympathetic gaze focused on Charli in his arms. “But I think it’s best if we get her home to rest. I can follow you and we can talk there, or we can do this in the morning. I’ll get this fingerprinted and taken into evidence.” Bently lifted the lid of the box with a pen and shook his head. His expression turned to stone.

“What is it? Why would he send this to me?” Charli asked.
